The Coal Industry Said What?
Global warming is with us and our government is doing basically nothing about something that should be our first priority.
“The Greening Earth Society” is a creation of the coal industry and they have some things to say about coal which produces more greenhouse gases than all other fuels combined. They predict the coal by products will act as fertilizer and turn farms into mass producing bread baskets. Of course they haven’t kept an eye on the melting glaciers which have shrunk the last twenty five years at a rate of about three times the historical normal. Farmers in India depend on the melting ice to produce their crops and with a dry season it will limit crop production and mean less food for the people. Vanishing glaciers will effect the world and warmer climates will fare worse than cooler climates.
Tropical plants are already at about the maximum temperature they can survive in. Although global warming will bring more rain fall it will be dry spells and deluges which will wither crops in times of drought and wash them away in time of deluges. There will be,” more precipitation extremes” as the IPCC calls them, in Northern Europe,South and East Asia, and parts of Australia.
Even with a small percentage of rising temperatures it will produce more harvest failures all over the world. It used to be we would have hotter weather and temperatures would return to normal. But with the climate in change there is no normal to return to.
Image via Wikipedia
Melting snow in the northern United States will effect the growing of crops when there is less water stored for irrigation. And crops cannot move with the climate. Iowa grows corn not just because of the amount of water but because of sunlight and the length of days.
So hooray for the coal industries who are the biggest offenders and are trying to pass it off as an accomplishment. It’s a load of bull. The government is doing practically nothing to stop global warming which should be our first priority. And we guzzle up the gas, and electricity which uses coal to pollutes the air and ruin what rivers we have left. It’s almost good enough for us if it weren’t for the children we leave behind to inherit the miserable world it will be.

Excellent article Ruby , it is amazing how this planet has suffered at the hands of mankind but I am the eternal optimist I believe something will be done before its to late. Yes I agree we deserve to lose it but like you said for the generations to come someone has to wake up to the destruction thats taking place

Coal industry must have a strong lobby behind it. How does the 9-11 photo fit into this article though?

I think our society has become more “Green” aware in the past several years. I also see the younger generation participating in that agenda. This is a positive sign.
I am ultimately optomistic about earthly nature. While I tend to do my part, I also believe that the Earth will eventually cleanse itself. It’s a nature cycle. Will it be too late for us is the question.

Excellent article. I am happy to see a slow yet positive change to clean up our environment. However, we have to all get busy doing our part to help, whether is is recycling, writing the government or planting a tree. In the end we will all benefit from a cleaner environment.

Nice informative article. Although i agree with your assessment of the coal industry having a big part in the greenhouse effect that we are now experiencing. I don’t think the coal industry should shoulder 90% of the blame. Our government has failed to use the technology it has to use and burn coal in a cleaner and safer manner. Coal has been a vital resource for our nation for almost a hundred years. If we can put people in space whenever we like, then we should be able to use coal or any other resource that we have in a safe and effective manner.

Too many people have their heads in the sand about this…
WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Best thing a person can do is to have only one child, technically that is still population growth (as you are still alive when you have the kid – thus doubling yourself – and probably more if they have a grandkid and so on.. before you die)
Reduce people!

Great article Ruby !!
The coal companies go to extreme efforts to portray themselves as friendly to the environment as well as the general public and property owners. I have learned overtime that they are nothing less than vicious. Our concerns will continue to fall upon deaf ears due to their greed.

Joe, thank you for pointing out my mistake. In hurry as usual, I mistook the 9-11 picture for a smoke stack. I have fixed it.
Thanks to all of you who took up your valuable time to comment. I appreciate everyone of you. You will never know how much.

We have done much to damage our planet and must do much to make amends. I’m not sure what the government is doing about the problem.
If all of us take steps to do our part and not purchase from companies that do not that will send a message.

This is a very open handed matter.
I do not buy global warming, as the earth has always cycled through cold and warm phases- ie the end of the Ice Age.
But, I am an advocate to stop destroying the earth with pollution. We are overpopulating and producing too much garbage for the world to possibly keep up with. I think everyone to do their part to stop wasting and overusing.
None the less, I appreciate your view and thought that you presented your argument well.

I think that our generation is waking up and smelling the pollution. Necessity has always been the mother of invention (as opposed to legislation), so when we are out of options our habits will change.

Very interesting article. I agree that we all need to help with global warming. But it is hard for me to go aginst the coal industry. Being from West Virginia the coal industry is a big employer here. With out it a lot of kids here would go hungry and also it put cloths on my back and shoes on my feet. I know here the coal industry is cleaning up its act. We all need to do our part. We have a strick rules about saving energy at my house. We keeps lights off during the day,we shut our computer off when we are not using it, we do not use the heat dry on our dish washer. We try to make a few trips in our car as we can and buy gas that we get the most miles from. We also only have CFL light bulbs in our home. If any one out there has not switched over to this type of light bulb yet I really advise that you do. I have had the same ones for 3 to 4 years and they are still going strong. I also advise getting the reusable shopping bags yes each bag is around 2.00 but it is a good investment. It is not like you will only use it one time and that is it. I also advise everyone plant a tree or two every year. If you have no place to plant a tree look into donating one to a local park or fill your house with green plants. We all leave a carbon foot print on mother earth so we all need to keep that print as small as we can.

A very good article. Our governments have failed us and we have failed ourselves. Power, progress, growth, and greed seem to be more important than the fate of our world. They should have been addressing this issue years ago but as long as money rolled in they continued their abuse in the name of progress.

Thanks for this wonderfully written article, Ruby. I know a little about global warming, but you help me get a better idea of it.

Ruby, good job.
Global warming is real, no matter what the cause. To think man has no contribution to it is, to me, just silly.
Coal? $ more important than species. There is no reason why with today’s technology every home can’t be outfitted with solar panel and every new construction use geothermal. In the long run it would create jobs and redistribute the $ from oil companies to smaller venues.
Thanks,
Clay

unfortunatly i don’t believe in global warming being caused by humans.. I mean, earth goes through a cycle every 45,000 years. We’re in that cycle right now. Also, is it truly the government’s responsibility to stop global warming.
Strong article though

thank you again everyone, Crissleigh, We are all dependant on coal for our energy and some such as you depend on it for your daily bread. In our area we were just as dependant on the textile mills. We didn’t think we could live without them but we all survived.Myself and practially everyone of my extended family, and almost everyone I knew worked in the mills. But you know what, when they all closed down and moved to Mexico, China or where ever we were better off without them. We got out of our nutshell and found something else. And we wondered why we hadn’t done that before. My ex husbands family came from coal mining country and his father died in our house of black lung disease caused by coal dust. I want you to know that you can look ahead and know something better is out there than coal mining and appreciate that it is so.We would still be in the mills if they hadn’t closed down and likely my children and grandchildren. Thank goodness for the closings.

All for the almighty buck – doesn’t matter – let the future generations sort it out. Absolute insanity!
