Animal Cruelty: What Can We Do to Stop It

by Dame Barbara in Activism, November 16, 2009

I had to write something on animal cruelty, for I am passionate about animals and their well-being. Neighborhoods and communities need to make it their business to make sure that the animals in the midst are taken care of and not abused. Signs of abuse must be reported. This can be done anonymously so no one needs to be afraid that their identity will be known. We all need to do what we can because they give so much to us. Let’s do what we can to give back.

What has this world come to? People are committing cruel acts against God’s creatures.  Fighting animal against animal for profit, dogs found chained up having been left for days on end without food or water. It is sickening to say the least.  Animals were not put on this earth to be abused and tortured. They were put here for our enjoyment.  Prison is not a good enough punishment for those that commit these crimes. Where is the compassion? The world has hardened a good many hearts and has brainwashed people into thinking that abusing a poor defenseless animal is okay. It is heartbreaking.  Much deserved praise goes to organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

In the city of New York there is an organization called the ASPCA. These are animal cops that investigate claims of abuse, and arrest the predators that perform the abuse. The ASPCA makes sure that these criminals pay for their crime. Most states do not have an organization like this, but if people would come together with one main objective, they could be just as effective in the fight against animal cruelty in their neighborhoods and communities.

The question still remains, what can we do to stop it?  First of all, we need to become aware of  our surroundings and our eyes need to be open. Learn to recognize abuse in our neighborhoods and community. When you see an abusive situation,  know the places you can call to remain anonymous and report the abuse.  Calls can be made to the  local Humane Society, police department, local animal shelter, and other places that can easily be found in the yellow pages.  Financial support is always a great option when it can be afforded. The support can be given to shelters, Humane Society, animal rescues, and any organization that is pro- animal care and safety, and is against animal cruelty.  Volunteering is another good option to lend support. See if the local veterinarian clinics could use some help. Sometimes they could use help cleaning the animal quarters, etc.  Go to the local animal shelters and ask the same thing. Volunteer  your services to rescues that may need  your help boarding an animal for a while.

We must come together to  ensure the safety  of these defenseless animals. There is no one else but us to come to their rescue. These animals have feelings and don’t understand why this is happening to them. They don’t deserve abusive treatment. They were not created to be abused by man, but to walk with man, and be here for our companionship. Anyone who does not have a place in their heart for these animals should never own or care for an animal.  This can be a precursor for being an abuser.  Each person should examine themselves before they ever decide to take on the responsibility of taking care of an animal. A person must value life in the smallest of forms and realize its importance in order to be a compassionate caregiver.   Animals should not be abused just like a child should not be abused.  Both are wrong.

Please, we need to get busy in this fight. Do what you can do and give what you can afford. Volunteer if possible. Do some brainstorming for other ways to help.  We will all sleep better at night knowing that we have done our part in a very worthy cause. Let’s make a difference in the lives of these helpless creatures and give them hope for a brighter future.
