Bamboo an Eco Friendly Alternative to Cotton

In the world of fashion, bamboo became a favorite for use clothing and dance yoga due to its very soft texture. Bamboo is also spied to be a sustainable alternative to cotton.

The bamboo plant is very sustainable. The plant is classified as a grass and can raise a category each day. Bamboo also need not be replanted after harvesting because its vast root network continually grows new shoots. Not only is the bamboo grows there quickly but it is a natural pesticide and therefore requires no additional harmful toxin (and need not be genetically modified) and is also naturally antibacterial.

The problem arises when we talk about bamboo clothing. While clothing maintains its antibacterial properties, the fact remains that the production of bamboo pulp in the yarn is full of dangerous toxins. The process is created from two different processes:

  1. Chemical – sodium hydroxide use cook fiber and carbon disulfide also wood for the bleaching process. This process produces what is known as bamboo rayon.
  2. Mechanical – machinery crush up the wooded parts of the factory where the bamboo normal enzymes are used to break the bamboo which is then turned into yarn.
  3. Unfortunately the treatment of chemical is the most popular method of production because it is not as labor or expensive than mechanical treatment. Due to the increasing popularity of bamboo clothing, there were more reports of large sections of clear-cutting of forest to harvest large bamboo plant. Not only that but the transportation of bamboo plants and contributes to global pollution.

Bamboo for the most part can be considered sustainable enough although not entirely organic. Despite the shortcomings of the bamboo clothing, it is always much more environmentally friendly than cotton and is a welcome addition in the textile industry.
