Bike-to-Work Week: How Green are We, Really?
An honest look at how the average citizen participates in the conservation of our blue planet.

Shop locally
Last but not the least, shopping locally not only benefits the environment and the local economy, it’s a great community builder. One Sunday morning, on our usual search for a good little breakfast café, my husband and I found this adorable local restaurant (www.citruscafe.com) where the service was STELLAR. The main waiter seemed to know everybody in the restaurant (rare in California), shaking hands and pausing for short morning conversations with the customers. It was like being home for Christmas. It made me feel part of a community, and that’s what it’s all about. Of course, it was easier to find great local shops when I was living in Vermont. There, even the “cities” seems like the country side. In the middle of Orange County, all I find are chains and big corporations. By visiting www.greenpeople.org, it is easy to find local green grocery stores, restaurants, pet store, furniture store, etc. Ask neighbors and friends for references. Again, the motto of the day is being resourceful!
Clearly, this article is not meant to be a scientific essay on conservation, but a practical tool box for every average citizen. Excuses never end when it’s time to change our habits. That’s why we need to start with something simple, free and that bring little change to our routine. A tiny step forward is better than a standstill. So, go ahead, pick, choose and commit! You’ll always have time to be the perfect “green” master down the road!

It starts one thing at a time. Talking about it helps to keep it in our minds. One little sacrifice at a time will multiply. If we all would do our little bit, it would make a big difference. Good article.
