Bumble Bee No More

No bumble bee, no future.

People every day walk by a rose bush, enjoy a fresh piece of fruit or savor the sweet flavor of honey. Oblivious to how truly lucky they are to be privilege to such simple things that we take for granite on an every day basis. But if they where to travel to others parts of the world were they are truly seeing the effects of the declining bumble bee population and its impact on the environment, they would stop and think twice about the next bee they swat and kill. While people every day exterminate large hives and call them a nuisance without a second thought to how they truly impact the ecosystem. There are other places that only wish they had such things to cherish let alone destroy. Such as a small village in china that truly feels these effects . There was a time when this place was very fruitful in its pear harvest., now in there attempts to keep there fresh fruit insect free, they began to apply insecticides to destroy crop damaging insects. But in their hast to do this they over looked one key player in the harvest, yes, the Bumble Bee. They destroyed the Bee population without seeing it coming. Now that’s not so bad you might think to yourself, no more biting stinging insects to bother me. But as we all know the key to this is the ability of the Bumble bee to pollinate plants in large numbers, spreading the seed and life force of the dependent plants around in order to sustain there own life and food demands in this codependent circle. So what do you get when you take away the ability to cross pollinate. You don’t get any fruit or flowers. Now no fruit and no flowers equal no rose bush, no fresh fruit and no sweet honey.
Now the people are faced with a dilemma either move from there land that they have farmed for hundreds of years or come up with a solution. So it was decided that they must hand pollinate the pear trees. So in a grueling process they carefully extracted the pollen from the male plant and with a jar and a feather they slowly climbed each tree meticulously pollinating each flower by hand. Now you might think this is a simple solution to a big problem, but you would be wrong. While the human substitute could pollinate about 10,000 flowers per family per day, this was a far cry from the 400,000 pollinated by the Bumble Bee. It has currently been estimated that if the Bumble Bee continues on this downward spiral they will be extinct in the next thirty years. Can you imagine the effects this will have on future generations to come. No more flowers,  no more fruit and possibly one day no more oxygen. This would probably lead to dust storms from lack of vegetation that would be caused by moisture bearing vegetation no longer keeping the ground soft and pliable and with that it would allow simple wind storms to pick up massive amounts of draught ridden soil. Causing the earth to look more like that of barren desert then the lush green lands we so know and love.

Knowing that the beginning of the food chain starts with plants and other photosynthesis reliant vegetation. Where would we stand under these unforgiving mars like conditions. “Extinct!” if you ask the opinion of some experts. This would be a deafening blow to mankind and civilization as we know it. All of this brought on by the swatting and extermination of what we call a Nuisance. All that we can do is try to educate and prevent future generations from eradicating this precious life force. We must also attempt to regulate the use and ingredients in today’s insecticides. While we are a large part of the declining Bumble Bee population we havent even begun to discuss the war being waged on the bumble bee within its own ranks. Not only must the bumble bee endure the onslaught of our own ignorance but it is also being threatened by a sneaky little look alike slipping through its own natural defenses The Bumble bee we have learned, uses a complex process of color, dance and chemical hormone recognition to determine friend of foe. This to is being manipulated within the colony. There is a small group of nomadic Bumble bees that are slowly intruding on the daily routine’s of the colony reeking havoc among them. This particular bumble bee will first fly into the colony in an attempt to fool the others into thinking it is the queen. If it fails, a unforgiving death awaits it. But for those that succeed the colony is guaranteed almost imminent doom. First the bee will kill the existing queen proving life force and offspring to the colony. That is when the ral trick begins to take place. Believing that they are serving their queen the colony goes about its usual business tending to the nursery and feeding those that require neutering including their imposter queen. In return the queen will then begin to lay eggs in the nursery. But that is the beginning of the problem. Instead of creating the usual “worker bee” the queen instead begins making exact clones of herself each requiring sustaining efforts from the worker bees as time goes on the worker bees soon run slim since they are no longer being reproduced to support the colony. They soon end up with a colony of exact copies of the sneaky lazy intruder queen. This all give no take process soon causes the colony to diminish and finally die leaving behind only useless clones.
Then once again the clone queens leave the colony in a attempt to repeat the same consumption only process throughout the surrounding hives. Now with this strain put on by the bees themselves coupled with our have it our way attitude the bee is destined to lose in the end. But given the inevitable end the truth being told the only losers’ besides the bees is the earth the ecosystem and those that rely on it namely Man kind We must take preventative measures now and get off this instant satisfaction kick the world has grown so fond of. Or there will nothing left to enjoy or future generations to enjoy them at that there is a silent cry for help in the world today and it sounds a lot liker a faint buZzZzZ
