Consequences of Passing Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)

Passage of Freedom of Choice Act threatens to undo restrictions placed on the abortion industry for the past 36 years.

For thirty-five years, the Right to Life supporters have struggled to restrict unlimited abortions legalized by the U.S Supreme Court decision to uphold Roe vs. Wade in 1973.  During that time, more than 30 million babies have been killed by abortion in the United States.

Thirty-four percent of them have been performed on African American women yet African Americans comprise only 14% of the population.  The majority of Planned Parenthood Clinics are located in minority and poor neighborhoods.  Not many people remember that Planned Parenthood’s original goal was to restrict the population growth in these communities.

Elvita King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, in an recent interview on Fox-TV repeated this fact.   She admitted she had two abortions herself.  Then the father of her third child said he did not want his child killed. Her father also told her he did not want his grandchild destroyed.  She said she began to rethink her liberal position that the baby was a “lump of flesh” and is now an avid right to life supporter.

Who knows how many productive citizens have been destroyed through a woman’s right to choose when these unfortunate human beings were judged to be “non-persons” with no First Amendments rights by the Supreme Court.  Yet many states have laws that rule the death of an unborn baby when its mother is murdered to be a second victim of that killing.

Abortion advocates have been trying to pass the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) since 1989.  With a pro-abortion President and Democratic Congress, the restrictions that have been enacted since 1973 are in danger of being eliminated by the passage of (FOCA) which the liberal Democrats want to pass and President Obama has promised to sign.  As a senator who voted against saving babies who survived botched abortions, there is no doubt that this president will do so.

Who can calculate how many more babies will be sentenced to death by their desperate mothers who have the right to that choice while their innocent children, whose only crime is that they are not wanted, do not have the right to choose life.

The National Committee for a Human Life Amendment has stated, “If FOCA becomes law, it will put at risk all the widely-supported laws that for 35 years have promoted women’s health, ensured informed consent, protected minors, ensured parental involvement, safe-guarded rights of conscience, and respected the desire of most citizens not to support abortion with their tax dollars.”

It further notes that FOCA will encourage challenges in court against any law or regulation that protects unborn children, their mothers and families from abortion and will bring a cortege of lawsuits reaching “beyond federal policies to every state and local law or regulation having to do with abortion.”  Recently North Dakota passed a law stating that a fertilized egg was a human being and was protected under the law.  This law will also be in danger of being overturned by the Freedom of Choice Act.

Another result of FOCA will be to force doctors, nurses and health care workera who refuse to perform abortion due to their moral convictions or religious beliefs, will be forced to do so or will have to close their facilities.  This will cause thousands of patients to have to seek other hospitals for their health needs.

If you are concerned with saving the lives of countless unborn innocent children, the time to act is now.  Write, email, or call your Senators and Representatives and the White House asking them to respect every human life and to reject FOCA.
