Counting Condoms in the Congo
A new direction for this class of interns. Westlake Pharmaceutical begins to revise their intern program to attack the scurge created by the HIV/AIDS
virus.
“Now you have an overview of just how you could fit into this picture. Potentially an exciting and challenging future. First, before going any further lets understand the environment HIV/AIDS lives in. Africa is the second largest continent in the world. Historically, these people followed our own trail of unjust treatment toward the African American. They were, as they say, moved to the back of the bus. The outside world paid little attention to their medical, social and economic needs. The word prejudice can be well defined thorough the practices displayed toward this population. How many of you know that this continent is made up of 53 separate counties, speaking over 2000 languages with over 20,000,000 eventually dying due to the HIV/AIDS scourge? That ladies, gives you an idea of challenges that lie ahead. While Westlake won’t find a cure for disease, we intend to be on the front line of this battle.” Continuing, Marabelle outline the scope of the program.
“The first line of defence has been the use of the condom. While a positive approach, tribal customs have had a difficult time educating the males on the condom concept. Historic customs have presented major boundaries for the use of the condoms. The male members of the various groups would not allowed their female counterparts to gain any knowledge on the purpose and use of the condom. So ladies you can see the challenges. We do feel, that our research staff is close to developing an initial prevention tool. I am not at liberty to give your specific details, only to say it is a liquid condom that will be applied by the female population. Because of the sensual feelings experience by the males when this liquid is applied, we feel we can over come any negative opinions the male population might present. Perfecting this prevention approach will be our initial thrust toward prevention of the virus. Catching the disease before it gets a foothold on the general population will be a start in the right direction. Another area currently under study is to find a way to eliminate the virus from babies born HIV positive. This study will include the methods uses to rid babies of any Jaundice condition they might have at birth. We feel there is a possible paralle approach to neutralizing the HIV virus using the same technique.
For those of you willing to enter this new world to see first hand the infections of the HIV/AIDS, to see the great sadness and to possibly witness the great excitement of controlling this virus, we will give you every consideration. Before this class ends, we will speak with each of you individually about any possibility of your interest in this program. If we see the intensity and desire required to become a member of our staff, Mr. Sam and I just might see you in Johannesburg.”
