Defenders of Wildlife is a nonprofit organization that is based out of Washington, D.C. This organization does all kinds of work in support of our furry, scaly, slimy and feathered friends. Defenders of Wildlife not only does field work, but they also speak out for these animals in legal and political arenas. They do work for wildlife and habitat conservation all over the United States.

Defenders of Wildlife was formed in 1947, under the name Defenders of Furbearers. Their mission, st first, was to protect wildlife from steel traps and poison. They have grown tremendously over the past 60 years and they now have more than 150 employees and a number of supporters. All of these people work diligently to assist all wildlife and their habitats.

Defenders of Wildlife works alongside other conservation groups all over the U.S., in other words, wherever they are needed. They stand up and speak out for all wildlife regardless of how cute or fluffy they are. The people that head this organization realize that these animals deserve their habitat and that each and every species is important.

The Defenders of Wildlife website at www.defenders.org proposes great plans and ideas for the conservative use of land. They also provide tips on how we can minimize our impact on wildlife habitats. The website also provides resources for people who wish to get active for wildlife in their area. Go to www.defenders.org/take_action/community_activism/index.php to find out how you can help in your neck of the woods. They have tips on how you can approach your local government or how to throw a wildlife party in you town.

You can also make monetary donations at their website, Defenders of Wildlife works solely on donations. They also provide volunteer opportunities; to sign up go to www.defenders.org/take_action/wvc/index.php. The Defenders of Wildlife Volunteer Corps helps you to take action in your area. You can also join up with them on one of the great projects that they spearhead. If you cannot volunteer your time or money, just sharing the link to their website with your friends and spreading the word about Defenders of Wildlife can help.

Defenders of Wildlife is a legitimate and very active organization. In 2005 Reader’s Digest named them “Best Wildlife Charity.” They were also one of Worth Magazine’s top 100 charities and they won The Natural Resources Council of America award for “Most Effective Action on Federal Policy.” If you care about this organization’s work, please help spread the word.

Very informative article. I think over the last five years, our government has made many strides in the protection of our wildlife. Well done.

The great thing about this organization, prettywolf, is that you don’t have to spend money to help out. Just getting the word out and taking a little time to help an animal in need is enough. :)
