Earth Day 2009

I am going to explain how easy it can be to better our environment by listing a few simple ideas that anyone can add to their daily routine to make a difference and help save our Earth.

Earth Day is held to make people aware of the growing pollution problem occurring daily.  The first “Earth Day” was celebrated on April 22, 1970.  Today, people of all ages across the nation still celebrate Earth Day.   Teachers, students, environmentalists, business workers, and the elderly can all be informed and take a few minutes out of their busy lives and help save our Earth.  There are many people who are interested and wanting to be informed about environmental  issues.  New products are being created, such as “Green Products.”  These are products that are environmentally safe.  They are less wasteful and less toxic.  “Go Green”  is a popular phrase that people are hearing and promoting daily.  Take a stand and do your part in helping to make our world a better place!

I am going to explain how easy it can be to better our environment by listing a few simple ideas that anyone can add to their daily routine to make a difference and help save our Earth!

Read, Research, and Learn

You can find many interesting books about the Earth, along with picture books for children.  If a specific topic about the Earth interests you, whether its global warming, pollution, recycling, etc.-research it, and inform others.  Take a class or educate someone else on what you know or new facts you have learned.

Conserve

You can conserve energy by turning off heat and light when they are not being used.  Also, by doing this, you will save money by lowering your bills.  We waste a lot of water by taking long showers or leaving water on while we brush our teeth.  Be sure to turn off water when you are not necessarily using it.  Take shorter showers and make sure the faucet is completely turned off after washing your hands.

Stay Away from Styrofoam

Styrofoam is non-biodegradable which means it will never deteriorate.  It takes up space and can pollute the Earth.

Recycle

Many and most items can be recycled.  Save paper that you don’t need anymore and use the back of it for scrap work, calculations, or doodling.  Plastic bottles and glass can also be recycled.  You can take them to a recycling center and get money for them, or clean them and find new uses for them!  Some ideas are containers or decorations such as vases, or mini greenhouses.

Plant a Tree

Gardening is a fun hobby!  Get some enjoyment by planting flowers or a tree to help make the Earth beautiful and clean!  A great day to plant a tree is on Arbor Day, which is held on the last Friday of April each year.

Remember to celebrate Earth Day this year!  On Earth Day, take a few minutes and look around, and enjoy all the beautiful things our Earth has to offer!
