Ebay Greening: The Other Side

by Marie Antoinette in Activism, July 14, 2009

This presents an easy, hassle-free avenue to join the “green society” in an effort to save the planet. This less discussed side of Ebay can make your “green transition” less painful, economic and faster.

Whether you want it or not, you are leaving your mark on this planet.  The mere fact of being alive binds you to it.  Eating, drinking, sleeping, wearing, doing… more than ever, these basic activities of daily living become traces of you – your mark on this planet, the price for living in a technologically advance society.  More and more individuals are joining the “green movement” by modifying their daily routines.  Many want to make changes, to be “greener”, but do not know where to start.  The “green conscience” is taking over and many of us are starting to feel the guilt of not being more proactive with the times.  We have jobs, families, demanding social affiliations, but no time left.  Researching this “green living” would be time consuming and there is always tomorrow.  Tomorrow becomes today and we keep hoping to be green, a vicious circle that keeps going around as the world turns.  Small changes, over time, make big changes.  Fortunately, there are websites that do the thinking and legwork for us “busy people”, and make the transition to a greener life, an easy one.  World of Good.com by Ebay is one of those sites.

World of Good.com by Ebay is a site dedicated to the green living.  You can shop, sell or join community groups in an effort to care for our planet.  All the products on the site are oriented to preserve the environment and are made by artisans or companies that embrace the green philosophy and lifestyle.  There are products on this site to cover most of your living needs and for all types of budgets.  Ebay has made the process easier by featuring products that:

·         Preserve animals’ natural habitat

·         Conserve energy during production

·         Utilize eco-friendly materials

·         Do not harm animals during production

·         Support local community services

·         Preserve native traditions and culture

·         Preserve native plants and ecosystems

These are some of the points highlighted by the site when you click one of their tags to view the products.  The site also features a variety of articles to educate its visitors in many green issues and good practices.  Businesses that are making a difference are spotlighted.  The site tags each product to help you identify its environmental benefit.  The product is assigned a visual tag that makes it easier for you to identify the benefit when you are shopping.  These tags are:  people positive, eco positive, animal friendly and supports a cause.  These visual tags let you know how you are helping the planet when purchasing the product.  You can access the site directly from Ebay.

World of Good.com by Ebay has done a lot of the legwork, by eliminating the guessing for you, when looking to shop for green products.  If you have been wishing for an easier and economical way to jump in the “green bandwagon” it may be worthwhile to check out the site.

You are living a trace, your mark on this earth; the type of mark you leave is up to you.  The traces that you leave will soon be followed by others.  The amount of time and energy that you put into it can start with a simple click.

Gosh I loathe the use of the word “green” to promote conservation and alternative energy, etc. Take ‘green energy’, -the growing of corn to make ethanol for automotive fuel. The only way a farmer will sell corn for making ethanol is if the price is higher than for food (which it is) which in turn drove up corn prices worldwide. the cost of say, corn meal for Mexicans increased some 800% according to a new programme I was watching recently AND because of the lucrative corn-for-ethanol price, MORE rainforest is burnt and re-planted for growing corn to sell to ‘green energy’ processing… so, -if you’re burning ‘ethanol-containing gasoline’ you are directly contributing to the destruction of more rainforest…

We really humped the pooch on that one… :-\

Side note though; a new project that uses ALGAE for fuel is being worked with. And, to feed the algae, it requires the ‘waste emissions’ of industrial facilities, cites, etc. Hopefully, no rainforest will be destroyed in lieu of creating ‘algae lakes’ for ‘green fuel’… :-o
