Fighting Paper Pigs: New Employee Onboarding Madness

What did that poor new hire do to deserve all that paperwork? It’s a terrible onboarding practice that even the largest companies have realized needs to go, but still it remains that some employers feel compelled to hand a new hire twenty pounds of paper they will probably not even have the time to read. Ways to get away from this practice are here and they’ll change your business for the greener!

Historically, the new employee onboarding process has always been a paper heavy process for every company. When you consider an attempt to revamp your onboarding process, prepare for a battle with the Paper Pigs. Speaking from experience, as a consultant I was given the opportunity to help eliminate a huge Paper Pig process that has been in effect since the inception of their company. I had no idea the political odyssey this project would take me on as an all out battle with the Paper Pigs of this technology company ensued. It really never dawned upon me until this moment how some people really thought their three ring binders were a beloved keepsake for every new hire employee. Truth is that onboarding documentation often expires quickly, it is barely effectively used by employees, and is just an overall waste for the business with the money and labor to required to produce the materials. Here are three ways to prove it to the Paper Pigs with a few great consulting weapons of choice:

Impact on the Environment – Paper Pigs don’t care so much for this particular weapon, but the people in the organization who are green will care. This initiative to eliminate wasteful business processes may prove in the end to have a snowball effect when properly championed. If you already have a company executive championing the efforts of the business to become greener, try to create an ally in this executive by selling the project to them first before taking your case to the Paper Pigs. The political clout of having an executive sponsor may make all the difference when pushing the Paper Pigs for change. A beautiful thing can happen once the business sees how much benefit it can be to remove processes that require so much paper.
