Five Simple Ways to Help Save the Planet
It seems like everyone’s talking about protecting the environment, but what if you don’t want to buy a new hybrid car or fit solar panels on your roof? Here are five easy ways to be green, without adding hassle to your life, or your bank balance.
-
Turn off the lights
Yes, I know it sounds simple, but that’s the point. If you turn off the lights when you leave a room you can drastically reduce the amount of power you use, helping to save the planet, and your electricity bill. You wouldn’t believe the difference you can make by only turning the lights on when you are in the room, and actually need them on to see what you’re doing.

Take things off standby
How many times have you finished watching TV, then just hit the standby button and gone off to do something else? Think of how much power is wasted by household appliances, when they’re not even being used. Is it really that hard to get up off your butt and turn things off properly? Whether it’s a TV, games console or computer, making sure that things aren’t left on standby can really help to save power.

Don’t take the car if you don’t need to
People have become so dependant on cars as a mode of transportation that it’s not only increasing our carbon emissions, but also our waistlines. I’ve seen people drive out someplace, just to walk their dogs. Yes, cars are a quick and easy way to get around, but if it’s not necessary, don’t drive. If you need to get somewhere, there are other ways to travel; take the bus or train, or if it’s nearby, cycle or simply walk.

Turn off the water whilst brushing your teeth
This is such a simple thing, and yet so much water is wasted every day because people don’t do it. In three minutes (the recommended time it takes to brush your teeth) up to three gallons of water is wasted by a running tap. Does the tap need to be running the whole time? Simple answer: no. So turn it off, unless you’re using it!
-
Recycle
There are so many things that can be recycled and so many ways to do it, that it’s become hard to avoid (not that you should be trying to). Everyone seems so eager to get you to recycle that you should have no trouble finding a place to get rid of your bottles, cans, paper and garden waste. Where I live, there’s even a collection of glass, cans and paper for recycling with the regular rubbish, so you don’t even have to leave the house. But even if you have to travel to a recycling point, isn’t it worth it in the long-run?
So there you go, five quick and easy things that you can do to be environmentally friendly. Hopefully, next time someone asks you if you’re doing anything to help protect the planet, you’ll be able to answer with a confident “yes”.
