Focusing on Carbon Neutrality is Hysteria
Our focus on labeling products we buy with a CO2 neutral stamp is out of proportions and clouds our judgement on where we should look to find a solution for out climate.
What the is happening with peoples obsession about being carbon neutral? It’s like people use the exact same products as they have always been using. Now the only difference is a small sticker saying that their car, computer, ice cream, printer, clothes, whatever… is carbon neutral. As ifa car can ever help with the reduction of climate changing gasses in the atmosphere? People are not seeing what the problem really is. Buying products which is labelled carbon neutral will not save this planet. Look at the planets general well being instead of just focusing on this single issue in one single way.
An analogy would be slimming. People tend to go for fancy diets and time saving slimming product that promises miracles, which hides the fact that in order to loose weight, you only have to do one thing – Burn more calories than you consume. It is as easy as that. You can say the exact same thing about the emission of CO2. Use less than we consume! Dammit – let’s start with planting a lot more trees and plants, and then let’s go away from burning fossil fuel as an energy source – that’s would be a way more sustainable direction… Well back to the health analogy. Making a person slimmer doesn’t necessary mean the person will be a healthier person, and the same way with this planet. Buying CO2 neutral products doesn’t necessarily mean we will get a better planet.
Carbon Neutrality is marketing! Period! It’s a term used to make consumers buy more products. It’s basically a re-branding with a slight change in the product… It’s a cause for the sake of the cause and It’s definitely not THE solution to whatever problem this planet might have. It’s a hysteric debate which is blind to the question: What is the best we do with the resources we got?
