Garbage and Landfill Sites

I wrote a report for school about garbage and landfills and I wanted to share it with you guys.

Garbage and Landfill Sites are located all over the world, this issue isn’t only a Canadian issue, however, a worldwide issue. Garbage and landfill sites are areas where urbanization hasn’t occurred yet, and there are no natural vegetation. These areas are known to be barren. This leads the government to use these areas as their countries garbage disposal. In addition, these landfill sites are bad for the environment and many other things.

There are no types of landfills, just methods on how they’re distributed. One way is that the garbage is thrown in an area and big machines are used to pack it down, making it easier for the garbage men to cover it with dirt to reduce the smell. Another type is that before the garbage is thrown a big ditch is created for the garbage to be thrown in it, making it also easier to cover it with dirt to reduce the smell.

Landfills and garbage sites occur in any country you can think of. My home country is Egypt, and since it is a developing country, you will see a landfill and garbage site every kilometre you drive. However, in places like Canada where it is developed, the government uses the triangle of conserving energy, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Moreover, in developed countries landfills are never near a place where urbanization has taken place, they’re always out of the cities, and away from people.

These sites occur in one easily specified way, throwing garbage in an area. However, landfills aren’t left there to create bad odour, as soon as there is enough garbage in the area; it is covered with dirt and soil, to reduce the smell. This process is good for the environment because it will not discourage scavengers such as gulls to settle in that area, where once was garbage. This process is also great for urbanization because after the soil and dirt is over the garbage the government can create airports or other buildings on top of the area where there was once garbage.

Landfill is one of the oldest ways of waste disposal, and even though there is an alternate -recycling- it is still used by many countries around the world. It is bad for the environment, yes; however, when buried under the dirt, it can create good organic material for the soil to be healthy. Landfills can be good for soil growth; however, many of the things that are dumped in landfills are plastics and non-biodegradable items.
