Garbage and Landfill Sites

I wrote a report for school about garbage and landfills and I wanted to share it with you guys.

What is bad and what is good about landfills? There are many biased answers to this question; however, there are some true answers. The main side that people proclaim is that landfills are always bad and never good, this is clearly not true. Imagine a country that has no landfills at all, no garbage site, no recycling programs, etc. That country will have garbage everywhere, since there aren’t specific places to keep the garbage. In other words you could call that country England in the fifteen hundreds. Even though landfills can be good, the bad side has so much proof and evidence. Landfills have garbage that is tightly packed together, thus not letting the oxygen to run through and around the area. This process will make the items decompose in a much longer period than regular decomposition of say a half eaten apple in my backyard.

How will it look like in the future? This is an easy question, if you use logic, your answer will never be incorrect. You can tell that the more pollution there is in the air, and land, it’ll end up going to water bodies as well, not only that but it will rise up and to the ozone layer and destroy it. While it is in the bodies of water it will damage and destruct the fish population, which will affect us humans as well. Lastly, on land it will affect humans and any living creatures that are exposed to these hazardous sites. With all these points in mind, in the future the population will of course decrease both on land and in the sea. More diseases will be found and even though technology will be much advanced to cure these diseases it will be very expensive, causing many to die. This is what the future can look like if we don’t stop using landfills and continue not to recycle often.

Through my opinion, I think that even though landfills can be good for soil build up, it is very bad for the environment and people should recycle more. Recycling is always a key to reducing landfills and garbage sites because these things can even damage the ozone layer that is continuously being damaged by Chlorofluorocarbons. Lastly landfills are not only a Canadian issue, it’s a worldwide issue that if not stopped and controlled, will have negative effects on the environment, people, and the whole world.
