Going Green in the Office

Most of us spend at least a good eight hours, if not more, at work in the office. Here are some simple but very effective tips on how you can go green in your office and do your bid to help reduce your carbon footprint.

Set Up Recycling Bins

Paper has the highest wastage in an office. Why just throw over-printed material and old documents away when you can have them recycled? Set up a dedicated paper recycling bin in a central location within the office and make a habit to deposit any used material there.

Avoid Printing Emails Unnecessarily

Emails are meant to be precisely “electronic”. Read them and save them rather than print them out. You can cut down paper wastage if you file your emails in your email folders or back them up in your thumb drive.

Print on Both Sides

Less is best! Set your print preference to print your document on both sides of the paper. Do the same for your photocopier. You’re actually cutting down paper wastage by 50%. But if you really must print on one side, stack your one-sided documents in a recycling tray and use the blank side as rough paper for scribbling notes.

Bring Your Own Mug

Make your cuppa without having to use disposable cups. You can greatly reduce the use of Styrofoam or paper cups with this practical habit. Plus, coffee really tastes better in a mug.

Cut Down on Air Conditioning

Office air conditioning zaps up the bulk of the electricity. Why set the temperature so low and pile on the layers of jackets while you work through sub-zero temperatures? Set the thermostat to a comfortable level and you’ll be surprised at the amount of money you can save on your monthly office electricity bills.

Switch Off When Not In Use

Before you hit home every day, make it a habit to switch off, not just your CPU, but your computer screen and speakers. Remember that energy is still being consumed even when your computer or laptop is on standby mode.

Be Conscientious

Remember to remember. Every bit you do to go green helps you stay green. Whether you’re in the office or at home, be conscientious about what you can do to cut down your carbon footprint.

Protecting the environment helps you protect your future.
