What is the role of Greenpeace in highlighting environmental issues? Has it achieved sucess in its campaigns?

An independent global campaigning organization, Greenpeace seeks to alter attitudes and behavior so that the environment can be protected and conserved. The main aim of Greenpeace is to protect out fragile earth by voicing its concerns. It also seeks to promote peace by highlighting and taking action on serious environmental issues that needs to be addressed.
Greenpeace has definitely been successful in achieving its aim.

The following are some of the key areas where Greenpeace has played a positive role:

  1. It has succeeded in bringing an energy revolution to address the threat of climate change which is a major concern today
  2. By challenging destructive and wasteful fishing and creating a worldwide network of marine reserves, it has succeeded in defending our oceans
  3. Greenpeace has done a lot towards protecting the world’s ancient forests and the flora and fauna therein and also the people who are dependent on them for their livelihood
  4. Greenpeace is also making a clarion call towards elimination of all nuclear weapons by working towards disarmament and peace
  5. It seeks to create a toxic free future with better and safer alternatives to harmful chemicals in manufacturing and products
  6. It is also campaigning for sustainable agriculture by encouraging socially responsible farming, protecting biodiversity and rejecting genetically engineered organisms

Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental degradation since 1971 and is present in 40 countries including the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. In order to have its own independence, Greenpeace relies on contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants and does not accept donations from governments or corporations.

Greenpeace has made a great contribution with respect to exposing environmental criminals, and has also succeeded in challenging the corporations and government when they go against the mandate of protecting our environment and our future.

Greenpeace has also been in favor of open and informed debate in addressing environmental concerns. The organization makes use of research and quiet diplomacy in the pursuit of its goals and also non violent and high profile conflict to improve the quality of public debate. Greenpeace represents 2.8 million supporters worldwide, and encourages millions of others to take action every day.

The world has a truly diverse forest cover which includes temperate, boreal and tropical forests, mangroves and rain forests and coniferous and broadleaf forests. These magnificent ancient forests are under threat. You can save these forests and the species that are dependent on them by working as a Greenpeace cyberactivist. In this way you can join millions of other people who are taking a stand for the last ancient forests.

The world is increasingly consuming more number of electronic products every year. This has resulted in the release of electronic scrap or e-waste which contains toxic chemicals. These chemicals cannot be recycled or disposed off safely. Greenpeace is trying to address this issue by pressing leading electronic companies for taking action pertaining to the safe disposal of their toxic wastes to prevent environmental pollution.

The organization has also played a crucial role in creating awareness about genetic engineering and its ill-effects and on problems related to nuclear weapons.
