Overview

The overall effect of global warming is really a potential danger to the human lives, its environment & the ecosystem and to the planet earth. 

We can notice the climate change these days such as:

Shift in season cycle wherein the summers are getting longer than the winters.  Calamities such as typhoons, flash floods, tsunamis and earthquakes are evident these days.

New diseases are coming out.  Scientific findings says bacteria multiplies more effectively and faster in warmer temperature.

Glaciers are melting in some parts of the world.

The rise in sea level and ocean current are making some densely populated coastal areas uninhabitable.

Some animals are forced out of their habitat even forcing them into extinction.

Causes of global warming

Global warming is caused by “Green house gases” which traps the sun’s infrared rays in the earth’s atmosphere and in turn heats up the earth’s atmosphere.”

Some green house gases are produced naturally like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and water vapor.  However, human activities are causing the increase in the production of these naturally produced gases particularly “Carbon Didoxide.”

Burning of fossil fuels such as wood products, oils, natural gas and coal emits carbon dioxide.

Major sources of carbon dioxide 

1. Power plants emits large amount of carbon dioxide produced from burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of generating electricity for human consumption. 

2. Engines of cars, airplanes & other vehicles contributes about twenty percent of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere.

3. Deforestation or cutting of trees leads to greater concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Trees collects carbon dioxide that we breathe out and gives back oxygen that we breathe in.

4. Methane gas on the other hand is produced by the soil decay coming from the decomposition of organic wastes in solid waste landfills.

Global warming prevention 

There are simple things that an individual can do to participate in fighting global warming.

1. Minimize the demand for electricity.  We can save electricity in our daily lives and resort to the use of alternative sources of energy such as wind power, power from water and solar power.

By simply decreasing the use of electric power, one is not only reducing the global warming problem but also breathing in cleaner air and saving money.

2. Minimize the use of carbon dioxide producing engines.  Decrease the use of one’s car by perhaps joining a carpool or using public transportation.  There are also fuel-efficient cars that are being mass produced.

By either decreasing the overall use of one’s car or replacing it with a fuel-efficient or hybrid automobile, we can reduce air pollution and also saves money on parts, repairs, gas, and oil.

3. Promote reforestation.  Trees are the largest known natural mechanism for removing carbon dioxide from the air. This is because they possess a large storage space for carbon dioxide in their structures.

4. Promote the recycling of waste materials.  Instead of letting waste materials decay in soil that tends to produce methane gas, let’s recyle waste materials. Segregate the bio-degradable and convert it to useful component such as fertilizer and recyle non-biodegradable materials.
