How Can We Protect the Environment?

There is always a tendency for city-dwellers to underestimate the capabilities of the country people. City-dwellers are believed to have the sophistication that country people can’t have considering their level of education, wealth and tastes. Tastes and the quality of education are still debatable as until now scholars are still looking for criteria that define tastes and quality education. But come to think of it, in terms of contributions to the destruction of the environment, the highest carbon contributions are found in the city. In the countryside, it is expected that there is minimal carbon emission. What good could education and tastes could do to us, if it will not use it for the good of the environment?

Well, honestly, creating pollution to our environment and preventing it doesn’t require a master’s degree or a PhD for that matter. All we need is pure common sense and sensitivity to detect that everything’s wrong with our environment, today. And we haven’t used our God-given wits to solve these problems. Recycling has always been taught in school but we didn’t practice it at home. We throw away non-biodegradable things like plastics that pollute the environment. We didn’t practice segregation with our garbage. And we consume electricity as if we can’t live without it. We want our air conditioners and heaters to be in full-blast even if we can just open the windows during hot seasons or use thick curtains or draperies during winter.

We never wanted to make sacrifices for the environment. In fact, in a survey, people’s concern towards their environment has decreased considerably. We never bother with our garbage, with carbon emission to our environment, we never mind anything about the environment!

Country dwellers are in fact more fortunate as they can still breathe the clean, healthy scent of air because they still have more trees and plants around them. City dwellers should visit the country sometimes and learn to go back to the basic concept of appreciating the beauty of the environment even without the luxuries of appliances and cars. They should also see how many trees have been cut down because of people’s greediness to get what he want without thinking of the environment.
