Life Size Barbie: Generations of Eating Disorders? Over THIS?
Life sized Barbie doll shows girls that pursuing the unattainable is a waste of time – and life!
Four years ago Galia Slayen was a student at Lincoln High School in Oregon – and she was an anorexic!
As a way to help herself on her road to recovery she built a life sized Barbie doll – converting the dimensions and proportions almost exactly from the original – and presented it at the First Annual Eating Disorders Awareness Week!
She presented it again this year at the Fourth Annual - where mega-Barbie made such a huge boob of herself that it landed them both on The Today Show! (http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/42643430#null – to see video!)
Big Barbie stands 6 feet tall with a 39 inch bust, 18 inch waist and 33 inch hips!
Not exactly real life – but that’s exactly the point!
Barbie remains one of the, um, ‘biggest’ pop-culture icons of all time - and perhaps dangerously so when so many name her as a contributing factor in their development of an eating disorder!
Galia also named her as a factor. She is blond and blue eyed – just like Barbie – which added even more impetus to look and be just like her!
She idolized her, and firmly believes that Barbie influenced not only her self-esteem and how she perceived herself – but how she perceived the world around her, as well!
Think about it: Barbie had the perfect clothes, the perfect friends, the perfect car, the perfect hair, the perfect boyfriend, the perfect house! She had the perfect life! But first and foremost - Barbie had the perfect body!
And it wasn’t just the little girls who thought so – was it, boys?
Let’s be sure to show our little girls THIS reality, shall we? To empower them to recognize that beauty comes in all shapes and all sizes and all colors?
And – let’s make absolutely certain they know that Barbie – can never be a ‘living doll’!

I reckon Barbie is transexual … those narrow hips and broad shoulders.

Sadly, parents do not educate their daughters on the images they see in movies, ads, magazines, and those who are anorexic. All the hype to be thin is wrong; and most ads, magazine articles/photos are air-brushed images…

Peer pressure is tough these days very tough. I think the boys should be reading this because most boys like those Barbie stick figure bodies and of course like you said society, the media and fashion magazines puts pressure on girls to look a certain way. How about Abercombie and Fitch. My thighs don’t fit in any of their skinny jeans. Their booty shorts must be like a size00. not too many girls fit this description. If you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful regardless of whether you’re air-brushed or not.

Are the proportions of Barbie really that out of whack. Ive undressed a doll or two in my day and on small scale it looks natural, not that every woman should strive to look like Barbie. For me she is not nearly curvy enough especially in the butt department.

Barbie is a bad influence, but the problem is much older than the doll. Galia’s life-size barbie has an 18-inch waist. After corsetting, Scarlett O’Hara’s waist was 16 inches. After Scarlett had Bonnie Blue, Scarlett couldn’t be corsetted down below 18 inches, the waist size of Galia’s Barbie.

L it’s D and you are so right on with this piece. As the father of 3 adult daughters, I’m proud they were brought up with “freethinking” and a diversity of ideas. One is a Controller working toward an MBA in accounting, another is a manager for a large medical billing practice and the 3rd is finishing up her MBA in forensic accounting. My one daughter that had Barbies, the townhouse, corvette, etc., also used to sit on top of the garbage cans waiting to help the trash men. She’s the one who is now the Controller for a large company. Like George Peppard used to say in the “A Team,” “I love it when a plan comes together.” LOL
