Patriotism

by st electrode in Activism, December 8, 2008

We all realize the importance of being patriotic and displaying the flag properly on certain days like Veterans Day, Memorial Day, or Decoration Day (as some people call it).

We all try to remember the sacrifice that the soldiers made for us. But what if we were all there, at that same battle field, and at the same time when all the soldiers where there fighting. I think we would not struggle to remember what the soldiers did for us but we would remember it in all our life. The soldiers risked their life just to get the freedom we all and have right now. But what does patriotism mean and why do I care about it?

In the dictionary it says that patriotism is commonly defined as love of and/or devotion to one’s country. But to me patriotism is one of our most important precepts because it teaches us how to be a good citizen to our beloved country.

Millions of young men have given up there life knowing the some well meet death and not see their families again, but they have proven the devotion to their country by giving their lives to defend this great country. Even though many of them gave all of us these great blessings that they won for us which we all enjoy now. We still forget to remember why those great soldiers that gave there life into this great country. In the crises of the nation’s history, youth has defended it’s honor with their life and honor that they have for their great country and nation. I think that patriotism is most important in today’s society because in today’s society young men don’t realize what being patriotic means and they don’t know what all the soldiers are fighting for. Back then the youth would join the army not just for shooting a gun but they would go to sever their country in time of need. Millions of young men given their life to fight for the Independence we all have and love now. All the young men have proven their heroic devotion to their great country by offering their life to defend this country that we all live in.

We could encourage patriotism every day not only on Veterans Day, Independence Day, and Memorial Day but every day because patriotism is one of the most important things in life. We all need to stand and support the troops off in war, and remember all those lost in combat. Even if youth in stepping up to take the spaces of the men lost in combat. Being patriotic gives you the rights to participate in in national politics, such as voting, joining national social movements, litigating in federal court, and enlisting in the military or severing in the civil service. Defending the Constitution is one of are oaths in this country, the constitution is, our written charter of government and all of our basic rights. The constitution is the very thing that makes America our beloved nation. The love and concern for the land of our country and all the people is the patriotic duty of ever American. In our minds patriotism is more then then the love to our country and nation but accepting individual responsibility. You don’t have to be a hero to be a patriot.

The average person can be a patriot by doing the extra things that makes our country a better place. Registering to vote, education yourself about public issues, supporting and voting for the best candidate and encouraging others to do the same are some action of being patriotic. And it’s the same for obeying laws and volunteering to help others when they are in the times of need. Patriotism is the love of one’s country with the attachment to the country’s land and people, admiration for it’s customs and tradition, pride in it’s history, and devotion to it’s welfare. Patriotism has existed in all ages and among most people. Patriotic songs and slogans had helped unite citizens in support of their country, during periods of war, revolution, or economic development. Schools help develop patriotism creating an appreciation for common memories, hopes, and traditions. Through the study of history, patriotic organizations maintain and promote such symbols of patriotism as the national anthem, the national flag, and national shrines and monuments. Patriotism is a way of living in this country and a attitude that shows through are actions.

As John F. Kennedy said ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” In my opinion, this statement sums up the attitude of a patriot. A true patriot tries to find a solution to problems that plague his/or her country not just complain about them.

Some people think you need to join the army just to be a patriotic. This is not true, just voting makes you a patriotic and it should be respected and practice. Voting is more then a right. It is a responsibility as an every day citizen. Another form of showing patriotism is just being vigilant and protecting our civil liberties that we enjoy. This is so important for us in today when our world around us is closing in. The world is a lot smaller today and our freedoms are continuously being threatened.

Even though things in America aren’t perfect, it is the best place in the world to live. Patriotism is the seventh of our beloved precepts. We all have to realize the importance of being patriotic and displaying to show flag properly on certain dates like Veterans Day, Memorial Day, or Decoration Day. Even if we all try to remember what the soldiers risked their life for. But we have to try to remember if I was there in their shoes would I remember it and celebrate more? We were all there in that same battle field at the same time even if we weren’t there we all thought about it. All the soldiers were there fighting, and I think we would not struggle to remember what the soldiers did for us but we would remember it in all are life.

Now we all can remember what the soldiers did for us getting the Deceleration of independence, and the Constitution that makes America, well America. The love and concern for our land and our people is the patriotic duty of every American.

Thank You
