Race in America

America does have a moral responsibility to help our children understand the history and effects of racism.

MaryAnn Cusimano Love wrote “Race In America‛ We Would Like To Believe We Are Over The Problem’” to state her belief that racism in America still exists.   Racism is an ongoing problem in the United States.  Delegate Frank D. Hargrove Sr. suggests we get over it to save face for Virginia, and to have said not a soul today had anything to do with it, does that prove we are “over it?”  Hargrove also argues that it is “counterproductive to dwell on it”(Hargrove).    Hargrove’s suggestion that we “get over it” by not bringing it up would be tempting, because it is easier than addressing the issue at hand.    This is still a problem today and I think it would be hard for any African-American to get “over it.”

“Is America ready for an African American president?”  A recent controversy in Virginia echoes the issue.  America does have a moral responsibility to help our children understand the history and effects of racism.  The discrimination in our school systems and workforces is still very strong.  Hargrove states that inequities of the past still persist today.  As Love states in her article, “to get over” racial problems today, we need to understand them, and their roots.  Senator Obama’s vision of a non-racial America is promising, if this could be accomplished.  However, there is still a wide range of ongoing racial issues in America.

Love used various statistical evidence to support her article.  The reference to Brown vs. Board case was proven true on many occasions.  America’s statistics will certainly prove that the African-American race is last in line for help, such as health care, medical attention, and education.  Several other studies have shown the different treatment against white verses black in America.  Love uses a strong voice to state her opinion on the situation.  She is very convincing with her words.  Love’s logical process was relevant in this article because she had the statistical proof to back it up.
