Really? Bamboo Clothing?
An explanation of how bamboo clothing can contribute to the environment.
Until a few weeks ago I was bamboo illiterate. When my friend told me about this, is there any wonder I said “really, bamboo clothing? Still not grasping this idea I decided to do a little research and was pleasantly surprised at what I found. The most pleasant surprise was learning that bamboo clothing is totally environmentally friendly.
It was a little hard to grasp that soft clothing could come from a hard husk of bamboo but the leaves and inside pith can be pulped, which after processing with a caustic soda and a very low chemical, can turn into material that can feel as soft as silk. The fiber that is taken from the bamboo is a little bigger than the human hair which makes it perfect for spinning, somewhat like yarn. What you end up with is a product that is much softer than cotton and more durable. It has qualities that can keep you dry in summer and warm in winter. It contains an array of colors like any other material on the market. I’m all for anything that is environmentally friendly.
Bamboo clothing is so breathable due to the construction of the plant where each fiber has little holes in it. This allows for ventilation in a garment and absorbs the moisture when needed like no other material. Due to this material being breathable it proves to be very useful in the winter. You can put on as many layers of clothing as you want in the winter but if it’s not breathable it is not doing the job you’re looking for. Bamboo clothing can do the job of keeping you warmer, in winter, and you won’t experience any discomfort of sweating and feeling clammy. It won’t stick to your skin as it is easy for bamboo clothing to breathe. Just what you need if you’re on a cross country ski trip in the winter. Bamboo will keep you dry and comfortable regardless of what you’re doing and I personally think that this type of material can’t be beat against any other material that’s on the market today.
Bamboo is environmentally friendly and a very renewable product. There are bamboo farms where bamboo is raised. It is fast growing and when a bamboo plant is harvested a new shoot starts to grow almost immediately. It takes no chemicals to grow this and it’s free of insecticides so with a product such as this it is my kind of product.
