Recycling 101
Recycling is everyone’s job. Are you doing your share?
It does not take a rocket scientist to understand what recycling can do for our planet. Let’s not think about the global warming, and everything linked to what people think, let just think about recycling.
In all honesty, we must realize that eventually we will run out a space to dump trash, it is bad enough that we “trash” our oceans killing life under the sea, in the oceans, streams and lakes. No body wants a landfill in their neighborhood, but if done properly, the land can be used in the future. In Japan they make golf course, here we leave it for year and years and then build on it. This is not my idea of using the land wisely, but if a landfill is left alone for what is deemed a safe period of time, it can be made into a forest, to replenish the thousands of trees that get cut down yearly. The trees can help hold the ground together and they will definitely grow well, since the ground will have nutrients especially if we only dump compost type garbage there before planting the trees. People forget that we need trees to breath, trees purify the air we breathe, by absorbing the pollution.
Simple ways to recycle at home is to cut back on paper towels and napkins, use wash clothes, and rags instead. Purchase a travel mug, instead of always grapping a new cup at your local 7 – 11, or Dunkin Donuts; some of these store actually sell travel mugs; and offer a discount when you bring it in for a refill. This cuts back on the usage of paper and Styrofoam cups, which only added to the pile up of garbage. Paper luckily breaks down and but Styrofoam does not; so the bottom line is Bring Your Own Cup, (BYOC).

Almost everything we use can be recycled, instead of buying cases of water, take your empty apple juice container; rinse it well and use it for storing cold water in the refrigerator. If you happen to purchase the water bottles, use them sparingly. Purchase a home water filter, and just refill these water bottles. Baby food jars can be reused to make your own baby food. Peanut butter jars, jelly jars and other containers that have a lid can be used for storage, of things such as package sugar, salt and pepper. The plastic peanut butter containers are great to store the above-mentioned items when you go camping, or going for a family outing where you may be bringing a picnic basket. The larger containers can be used to store plastic ware such as forks, spoon and knives for outdoor use.
When you go shopping today, they have bags that are designed to help cut pack on the use of plastic bags, which is very good way to recycle, since you will always use the bag. If you don’t have one or several of those bags, and still pack your groceries in plastic bags, recycle them by use them for your house hold garbage. It’s a matter of using something more than once.
Clothing if not too worn or stained can be donated to different organizations and churches for the poor, why throw away an outfit if it was only worn once or twice.
The most important thing to remember is that by law we are required to recycle batteries. There are recycle plants in every town, city and state. Computers and their components, along with television and other electronic have regulations regarding disposal of them, find out from your local sanitation department. This is our earth; we need to preserve it for generations to come.
