Running Out of Water
Predictable surprise? How true are the warnings and can we avert the disaster?
There have been so many movies predicting what the future will be like, the most memorable one is “Road Warrior” in 1981 where drinkable water is a scarce resource. Even now in many parts of the world, we hear about water rationing during certain times of the year.
Even in countries like Malaysia, a tropical country, we have to ration water from time to time when there is a shortfall of rain – imagine that!
Just a last year, everybody is concerned about the oil prices, concerned that we will round out of oil and price of oil going up more than US$100/- per barrel. People are scared about not being able to travel, almost all our transport depends on oil to move. But at the end, does it all matter if we are dead?
I have no doubt that nature will survive and adapt, as you can see below:

There is now an article circulating warning us that we will run out of water way before we run out of oil but there seems to be little done or little concern. We still see a lot of wastage of water – leaking pipes, polluted rivers. Dumping of toxic chemicals into the sea.
The main difference I see is that oil is driven more by economics where water is not as much. Also, the impact of the lack of water does not happen as frequently.
The growth of human population will outstrip the water resource but unless we start planning and looking ahead, we will have a major crisis in our hands. Singapore is an example, it is an island state with limited water resource. It buys majority of its water supply from Malaysia. However, it has also started processing and recycling water that it uses though the cost is quite high.
One problem to consider is how do we expect people to plan for their own survival when they can’t even manage their own finances. Look at the number of people in bankruptcy because of the debt from their credit cards and loans.
What does the future bring? Is there hope? Wake up, nature is given us warning of the disaster to come, we need to work together to avert them.
