Self-Sustaining Even During a Shortage Nationwide

Gas goes up, grocery prices go up, why? They say it is transportation cost but it must also include production cost rises. How can you fight this budget buster. Few of us will do this but I suggest becoming more self sustaining, at least where food is concerned, and a few changes in our buying practices.

Could you be self sustaining if you had to?  As we see the price of gasoline go up, should we not ask how far behind will be the grocery cost rising.  We have great production areas in California, the valley in Texas and the sunny south Florida.  Other large areas in Hawaii mostly human food and the mid-western plains with potatoes, wheat, corn and many other variety of food, much of which goes to animals.  Isolated spots scatter all over the country people grow human food commercially.   BUT did you know that the bulk of our human food comes from foreign countries.  Next time when shopping look at the bar code.  If it starts with 0, then it is from the good old US OF A.  Any other beginning number it is foreign, that includes many fresh vegetables and fruits.  So naturally, if fuel cost goes up, food prices go up due to the very expensive cost of transportation.  Being a bit more self sustaining would help.  You can do something about it, I will show you how.

Each of us can help cut the cost of transportation by not buying from foreign countries.  I lived most of my life in south Louisiana and yes, I eat crawfish.  It is almost criminal if you do not, it is like a favorite dish amount the south Louisiana folks, especially the Cajuns.  I have even trapped them from the Achafalaya River Basin just as the Cajuns do.  These are not just ordinary crawfish, nature has developed them for long and bulky tails for the fish they live among.  One day some hungry Cajun boiled a few, ate them and history was born.  (Not a true story) but some how the first was eaten.  Now you can buy the frozen crawfish tails from many food markets all over the country.  Read the bar code, those fine looking crawfish tails may be from CHINA.  Not the same, not as controlled packaging as here in the USA.  China is a long way away, shipping is not cheap even if their labor is.  Look at the bar code and BUY American.  Here are the basic codes: 690-692 … then it is MADE IN CHINA .
           00 – 09 … USA & CANADA
           30 – 37 … FRANCE
           40 – 44 … GERMANY
           47 … Taiwan
           49 … JAPAN
           50 … UK
You might ask how does this help you be self sustaining?  Let me answer in this way, what good does it do your pocket book to send the money out of America?  Do they offer you a job?
