Six Ways to Beat Shocking Energy Price Rises

Energy suppliers want to get as much money as they can for what they provide – but there are ways to beat them at their own game.

Everyone seems to be feeling the pinch these days and with prices rising there’s never been a better time to put these money saving tips into action.

Cut Fuel Bills Without Feeling the Chill.

  1. Boilers

If you own your own property review the age and condition of your boiler and consider installing a more fuel efficient condensing boiler to cut heating bills by up to 30%.

  2. Thermostats

Save a further 5% by lowering the thermostat on your heating by just one degree – or more if you can. Then cut the time you have your heating on for fifteen minutes a day and save 45 hours of fuel costs over the next six months. Use your heating system timer more efficiently to further shave off the time you have the heating on.

  3. Radiators

Close off the radiators in rooms you rarely if ever use and keep doors shut to stop more heat escaping. The old fashioned but effective use of ‘’sausage dog” draft excluders at the foot of each door will keep you cosier too. Old tights stuffed with newspaper aren’t very trendy but they do the job!

  4. Insulation

A quick browse through the Energy Savings Trust’s website suggests the amount of energy lost through poorly insulated homes could heat three million homes a year. So lagging pipes properly and reviewing both loft and cavity wall insulation makes sense. The elderly and vulnerable can get government help for this and your fuel supplier may run schemes to help these groups with costs.

  5. Water

Lower your energy bills by cutting on wasted water in the bathroom – check how efficient your shower heads are and even cutting showers by a minute can save a significant amount on your bill.
Particularly if you have a water meter (economic to get one if you’re a small family), consider installing a ”hippo” in your cistern to cut water usage when you flush. Dripping taps can also waste litre after litre.
Washing machines are also thirsty creatures – consider investing in a new machine rated AAA that will use less water and less electricity.

  6. Suppliers

Go on line or get someone to do it for you and use a price comparison site to check whether you’re getting the best prices for your fuel. Switching is done with the press of a button and the suppliers do it all for you.If you have a prepayment meter consider the cheaper option of monthly direct debit – some suppliers offer financial incentives to swap.If you’re already on direct debit ask the supplier to review your payments – you may be paying too much.
