Southeast Asian Youth Say Yes We Can

YES2009 Youth Engagement Summit in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia last November 16-17, 2009 @ Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC).

About 4,000 youth aged 18-35 from Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam, and Brunei participated in Youth Engagement Summit 2009 (YES2009). It was organized by Sledgehammer partnered by YouthAsia and SouthEast Asia Youth For Change (SEACHANGE).

YES2009 was held in Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) in Malaysia last November 16-17, 2009. The two-day summit was inspired by President of United States Barack Obama during his “Yes We Can” campaign for social change.

Over 610,000 youths all over Southeast Asia signed for support via internet through its website www.yes2009.asia have said “YES” to change.

Global icons and changemakers like Sir Bob Geldof (Founder of Live8 and Live Aid), Biz Stone (Co-founder of Twitter), Randi Zuckerberg (Director of Market Development at Facebook), Nando Parrado (Ultimate Survivor and Inspirational Speaker), Dr. Mamphela Ramphele (Former Managing Director of World Bank), Datuk Tony Fernandes (Founder of AirAsia), David Magliano (Director of Marketing for London Olympic 2012), Garry Kasparov (Russian Living Legend of Chess), Lorraine Hahn (Former Presenter for CNN and CNBC), Long Yongtu (Former Vice Minister of Trade in China), Yashwant Sinha (Finance Minister of India from 1998-2002), Narain Karthikeyan (Indian F1 Driver Champion), and Donald Trump (founder of Trump Organization) were the speakers of the Youth Summit. They shared their experiences, success in life, ups and downs, and their insights.

Biz Stone

Donald Trump

Lorraine Hahn

Here are some quotable quotes from the speakers:

“Tiny bits of information can create a profound impact.“, said Biz Stone.

Sir Bob Geldof, said that everyone has the exact same potential if they’re given the exact same opportunity.

“It is important to drive a plan. The key to success is to be objective about your strengths and weaknesses.”, added Garry Kasparov.

For Donald Trump, host of TV show “The Apprentice”, Success sounds a simple word but it is so COMPLEX.” He also added that a quitter will never be successful.

“Grab every opportunity, if you fail you can try again. You can’t be a great leader if you don’t go to the ground.“, said Datuk Tony Fernandes.

Lorraine Hahn who facilitated the forum, said that “It’s the youth who build the future, not the future build the youth.”

Narain Karthikeyan, F1 Racer Champion, encouraged youth to never give up. “When there’s a will there’s a way. If you start something finish it.“, he added.

Many people want change. All of us want change. Change must begin within ourselves before we can change our community and our nation. Remember that the power of change is in our hands. Anything is possible if we put our mind and heart on it. As one of our great patriot declared “The youth is the hope of the nation”, I believe that lies in the shoulder of the youth are great responsibilities in building a better nation.

Youth Engagement Summit 2010 (YES2010) will be held in Indonesia.

    Hi,

It is a great opportunity for young people nowadays to attend such summit and have the chance to be heard by global icons. Continue to grab these opportunities because this will strengthen your convictions and prepare you for the future.

I’ve been to the summit and I can say that the youth of today is different, in that, they are more empowered and have many more doors of chances open for them.

Continue to grow and let this be start of the change that we are all looking forward to.

God bless and see you soon :)

    well done, jayson!
we sure have learned so much from the summit.. like what khailee said, we’ve come too far to let it end here.. this is just the beginning. hopefully, we would be able to share what we have learned from the summit with others.. that we will continue to aspire and inspire change both for ourselves and for others.. i would also like to share a couple of valuable lessons i learned from the speakers..

The man who knows how will always have a job. the man who knows why will always be his boss

Failure is not trying. Failure is not having the belief that you can do it”

I don’t want to sit when i’m 55 and say, “We should’ve done it. Because by then it would’ve been too late”

Find potential in people that they don’t even know they have

Give them the opportunity, let them reach the skies

We can make our own heroes..

whoever said what.. well, that’s something i’m still gonna try and figure out.. lol. it was a wonderful event that i was fortunate to be a part of. because through it, i met you guys.. i miss you! take care and God bless..

Jayson have done a really good work to post here such a good article about YES2009. The article reminds me about the seminar, the presentations, the participants from different countries in not only Southeast Asia but also in other regions of the world and also keeps me more motivated and inspired after the lessons I have learned at YES2009.
Keep doing things to engage more youths to make the CHANGE we want to see.
    This article should be rewarded.

Jason has never failed to make an excellent chronicle of the prestigious Youth Engagement Summit 2009. While the advent of modern technology sparked rapid changes in our daily lives, the youths had never shirked from staying at the vvanguard of that forc, shaking its erratic swings, and leading the drive to correct history\’s imbalances. With Jayson superb theoretical illustration of the summit, one can really have a good grasp of what the summit has in stored for the rising generation.

Im proud Jayson made something like this. It makes the summit’s legacy standing.

Kudos bro. Hats off:-) You make us proud. Give me more.

Very fine article. I’m happy to see an American President that the youth can relate to. President Obama is now fighting
corporation interests and their powerful lobbyists. That’s more
challenge there than many of us can imagine. Say a prayer for him. And I wish YOU the very best.

Oh, I’m so happy to see how many friends you have made already! Good for you! This was another enjoyable and informative article, Jayson. Yes, it is our youth who are the future, without our youth to take over from us, we would have nothing. So, we as the parents and grandparents of this forthcoming nation of young people, must continue in our endeavors to make sure our youth has all of the opportunities they can possibly have, and not to forget, the love we have for our children and theirs!
    Kudos!

Change what? Consider that the only life you have any rightful control over is your own. Then, change what? Change injustice in a system that makes youth feel that when you reach 55 years of age its all over. Make the change to economic Justice for all, so that people will receive a fair days pay for a fair days work, and that means being paid enough to live in an apartment or house and not under a bridge. Change a system that increasingly talks about Human Rights while it seeks to actively limit them. Change those who control the gateways to opportunity but who allows access only to those who are rich enough to play the game.
