Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

This is about what I did to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

On October 17, 2009 I attended the Cancer Walk. I attended the Cancer Walk because I wanted to make strides in supporting Breast cancer awareness month. I dedicated the walk to my mother because in 2003 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and today she is still in remission. She has been in remission for seven years and I am very proud of her for beating the odds of breast cancer. What I have learned from the Cancer Walk is that I am very fortunate to become a supporter for the event and that I can reach out to other people who have had loved ones that have had breast cancer before. Overall, the Cancer Walk was very well prepared, I had a lot of fun, and I got to meet other Cancer survivors, along with my mother who beat the odds of Breast Cancer.

When I got to the Cancer Walk the space looked great. It was filled with vendors that had food for all of us to eat after the walk, a registration booth for all the walkers and their families to get registered for the walk, and a nice stage area for entertainment. Before the walk started we all got to dance to music and warm-up with the Zumba Girls. I thought that was a lot of fun. Meeting lots of cancer survivors was the other thing that was done before the walk started. All of the survivors introduced themselves and mentioned how many moths and how many years they have been in remission. As I walked with all of the walkers I was able to talk with some of the walkers about either losing a loved one to Breast Cancer or beating the odds of Breast Cancer. The event took place at Fifth Third Field, and this walk was a 5K walk.  A lot of people attended, and so did their families as well; this is why it was a big success again this year.

I think that the Cancer Walk was a lot of fun because I got to meet lots of cancer survivors, I got to dance to music and warm up with the Zumba Girls before the walk, and while I walked with all of the other walkers I got to speak with other people who have had loved ones beat the odds of Breast Cancer, or lost their loved ones to this disease. This is my second year doing the Cancer Walk because I dedicated this walk to my mother. She is also a cancer survivor, and after seeing what she went through I decided to become a supporter for her and all of the other cancer survivors as well. This event has taught me to be a better person by making sure that I stay healthy, get check-ups from the doctor once each year when I can, and to continue to get exercise. I have learned a lot from this event because I can reach out to others who lost loved ones, and to others who need support and love. Lastly, I felt that the time was well spent because I enjoy talking to others about this disease, and I enjoy being around lots of other people when it comes to events like this.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer is very uncomfortable because there is a lot to go through, such as radiation, Chemo, and infection shots. I know this for a fact because that is what my mother had to go through. Whenever she was down and sad I would comfort her with my love and support. When she told me that she had cancer I thought that I was going to have to grow up without a mother, but she beat the odds of this disease and I could not thank god enough for healing her. I hope that her remission will continue for the next couple of years because I love her a lot and she is the only friend I have that cares for me when I need her.
