Take a Green Shower

We are all trying to be a little “greener” these days. Here are some ideas on how to “green up” your shower.

I learned how to make a red shower when I lived in dorm at Winnipeg Bible College in the early 80’s. This article has nothing to do with putting red jello crystals in the shower head. That would be cruel. So Merlin B. if by any chance you are reading this, it wasn’t me, although I do know who frosted your room, but I’ll never tell. (On a not entirely unrelated note, your secret is safe with me Kathy B.)

No, the green I am referring to here is of course, how to be more environmentally friendly. One myth to bust is that you can save water by showering with a buddy. That doesn’t take less water – sorry Honey.

I’ve never been very quick in the shower. I’m just one of those people who takes 10 minutes to get the cap off the shampoo bottle, only to discover that it has a flip top.

It has taken me about 30 years to figure out that I don’t have to have the shower water running while I read the list of ingredients on the conditioner bottle. I could just turn the water off until I need to rinse. Go figure!

So now, I take just as long as ever in the shower, but I use a lot less water. I turn the water on just long enough to get wet, and then I turn it off while I shampoo, condition, and soap up. It helps to have the kind of water faucet that has hot and cold in one tap so you don’t have to fuss with water temperature.

Now I can use all of the water I am saving to justify having a tubby time in my jetted tub after I have had a green shower.

Oh, and if Merlin is reading this, I am very sorry about sewing your blanket to your mattress, tying all your shoes together, and turning all your posters backwards – that was me.

Loved the title of this one. I know it is greener to take a short shower but I love a long hot shower in the winter. I guess I must be red.

Nice one Karen. It’s hard to keep on putting the shower on and off ,but I try. I wish my son who takes almost 30minutes shower could learn this.

Oh Karen, your antics sound just like the ones we used to get up to when we were at college. As far as the green shower goes. My hubby insists that I shower the way you suggest in order to keep his water bill down, and I am only allowed two inches of water in the bath as well. I used to love a soak,LOL.
    A good article.

    Red jello crystals, eh?!
Couple years ago we installed solar collectors, they are great, but the water is still clear!
    Thanks,
    Clay
