Tavis in Toronto

Speaks about a program that the police have came up with to cut down on drug action and violence in our communities.

Time and time again, we are faced with violence, segregation, and deaths in our community, when would it stop? This summer the Toronto police force has came up with a plan to cut down on the amount of violence and drug use in our community (Jane and Finch). The project that they have planned is called Tavis. With Tavis the police have the right to stop and search any individual at any given time without any questions asked, they would have over 200 dedicated cops that are just towards the Tavis project, they will be patrolling the community 24/7. The problem that allot of community members have with this project is the fact that they beleive that this gives the police such of a right to harass young individuals if they have not done so already. I agree that our communities needed a program like this, because every summer there are about 30 deaths and during a whole year a total of 70 or more. What I disagree with is the fact that when we have such a program like Tavis in our community, the people of other communities tend to feel a slight discomfort when having to come into our community. We are happy to have this project, but we hope that things turn out for the better and not for the worst.
