The Apocalypse We are Going to Face

Global warming is the buzzword these days. Newspapers, magazines, news bulletins, ecologists, scientists all are warning us against global warming. Governments through out the world are under pressure to take pre-emptive action against the catastrophic consequences of the phenomenon. People talk about it. But most of them have only an inkling of global warming. They don’t know what it is all about and what its catastrophic implications are.

Global warming is the gradual rise in the earth’s temperature which is caused by high levels of carbon-di-oxide and other gases in the atmosphere.

Mere definition of global warming does not convey the catastrophe it implies. Here in this article I am going to show you a glimpse of the disasters caused by global warming.

Scientists say that the pre-industrial level of global temperature was about 14c. Add only 2c to it and the Amazon rainforests will be destroyed.

Imagine what would happen if the temperature rises by 3c from the pre-industrial level. Scientists have an apocalyptic answer : it would result in the destruction of about 75% of the green cover around the world result in the destruction of about 75% of the green cover around the world by the middle of the next century.

Leave it. Let us ponder over the consequences of only 1c rise in temperature. It would trigger a plague of disasters for the forests (and hence the life on the earth), and the process would be almost irreversible.

And do you know why the process, once it begins, cannot be reversed? Because it gains strength and sustenance from within itself, i.e., it backs itself. Destruction of jungles amounts to lessened number of trees. The lesser the number of trees, the lesser the rainfall and hence the lesser the water evaporation. The process continues unabated causing imponderable damage to the earth’s climate and ecology.

The implications of global warming have now covered poles too. Poles are covered with ice. But if the global warming and the greenhouse effect continue unchecked, the ice caps on the poles would become history. Such a disastrous development would make existence of life in that region impossible. Weather patterns around the world would change for the worse. The glittering white ice that now reflects the heat of the sun would turn into dark water which would begin absorbing the energy and start melting more ice.

And then all this would lead to the political ramifications of global warming triggering confrontation between countries over mining and shipping lanes.

This is only a glimpse of the impending disasters global warming, if not addressed, is going to bring about.     

We are facing the catastrophic effects of global warming. Even a small rise in the global temperature will be disastrous for us.
