The International Day of Peace: 9/21

September 21 is International Peace Day. See how you too can participate.

International Peace Day – 9/21

As some of you may know, September 21 is the International Day of Peace. This all started back 28 years ago in 1981. On the second Tuesday of September that year, Peace Day was established by a United Nations resolution to go along with the opening of the General assembly. The following year, the very first Peace Day was celebrated.

Since the 1980s, technology, warfare, and many other things have changed greatly, except one thing – a striving for peace. In 2002, the General Assembly declared September 21 to be the permanent Peace Day. The United Nations did all of this to show that they were devoted to worldwide peace. To go along with this, they continued to encourage cooperation among others of different race, religion, and countries. Today, millions of people participate in private and public events to celebrate peace. You too can participate by doing something as simple as lighting a candle at noon or meditating.

Peace day is also a day of ceasefire. This is both personal and political. For example, your own relationships and larger conflicts like war or discrimination. Just imagine a whole day of peace. What do you think that could do for the world?

As I am running out of what to say, I will end with some quotes about peace.

“There is no good war or a bad peace.” – Benjamin Franklin

“Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by an understanding.” – Albert Einstein

“Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace.” – Anonymous

Thanks for taking your time to read about International Peace Day. Now, how can you promote peace in your area?
