The Ultimate Environmental Damage
This is the best the human can think to prevent environmental damage and global warming. No humans, no damage.
Mr. Porritt has not attempted to study the research works as evidence gathered over the decades confirm that two-parent families benefit society (and the environment). Most recent study conducted for the Children’s Society concludes that they do best when brought up by two parents with a ‘longterm commitment’ to each other.
The report also identified weak areas that can be addressed to enhance cohesion between children and society, the environment.
The report warns that children of separated parents are 50 per cent more likely to do poorly at school, be unpopular with other children and suffer from behavioural difficulties, anxiety and depression.
The inquiry also pointed a finger to the rise of ‘rampant individualism’ in society, which has eaten away personal responsibility and any sense of the common good. More parents are cohabiting rather than marrying which is a clear example of such attitude.
The economic independence of mother and the advent of the welfare state have contributed towards break-up of family structure.
Making children a part of the environment is the best way to protect it. Environment is not mere collection of nonliving constituents rather humans, and specially children, are an integral part of it.
Mr. Porritt wants environment to be protected at all costs, even if the cost is humanity. Re-coursing funds towards contraception is not the best way to address the problem, but the need is to invest in society and then reap the benefits to the environment.
Just to point out to Mr. Porritt, that the decision on the number of children one should have should remain vested with the parents. Yes, the government and representatives of environment, like Mr. Porritt, must work to create awareness and not to blame or dictate.
Parents should consider realizing a balance between resources and the number of children. It seems pointless producing children without giving quality life and imparting them good social values. Environmental awareness be made an integral part of their development curriculum to engrain concepts which will help save wastage of resources on the whole.
