Think Before You Print: Save a Tree
I often see this on one of my friends signature in her e-mail. Come to think of it. We can really save a tree if we think before we print.
Paper is made of wood pulp, cotton and textiles, but mostly wood pulp wood cellulose is used. How many rims of paper can be made out of a single tree? I could not be certain. But the fact is, a tree is cut down to produce papers, and other wood products for our consumption.
Imagine this scenario. A drafter who prints a 52-paged erection drawing to be released for construction. This 52-paged erection drawing will undergo the usual checking and editing phase. Let’s say, the drafter’s precision and efficiency is around 80%. This means that 20% of the 52-paged erection drawing (11pages) will undergo editing and reprinting. Using a heavy duty printer, all of these pages would most likey be printed as expected. But assuming the printers efficiency at 95%, another 5% (6 pages) of this erection drawing will go to waste. For releasing, the Service Engineer required 8 copies of this 52-paged erection drawing. Doing the math, the total number of paper that will be consumed for this erection drawing will be equal to:
total number of paper consumed = (52×8) + 11 + 6 = 433 pages
A single ream of paper is around 500 pages, so a drafter uses a ream of paper for this single project. Imagine 5 drafters doing this everyday for a year. Approximately that would be equal to 1500 reams of paper or 750,00 sheets of paper. All of these paper will go to waste unless a environmentalist or someone who needs extra pennies in his pocket sells this paper to the recycling plants. A tree needs a decade or more to full develop and grow. A single tree would not be enough to make 1500 reams of paper. So just imagine how many hectares of trees are broken down to be able to produce this amount of paper that will eventually turn into waste?
If this cylcle will continue for a decade more, I would not be surprised to see a tree on Wikipedia defined as an extinct living organism once present on Earth.
So guys, do your part.
Think before you print.
Save a tree.

Printing Actually Saves Trees

Think again. More than half the paper used in the US is produced from responsible tree farmers. If everyone cuts back on their printing, there will be less demand for paper. Since the owners of the tree-farms intend on profiting from their land, they will elect to develop or sell their property, destroying the trees you think you’re saving by your conservation.
Paper is recyclable and a renewable resource. Your ecological preservation efforts would be better placed elsewhere. Please print on paper, keep trees growing and people employed. Stop spreading falsehoods about the dangers of tree extinction. They will most likely still be here long after we are gone.
