What Will You be Doing During Earth Hour 2008?

by Dee Huff in Activism, March 16, 2008

In an effort to counteract the effects of global warming, WWF is asking individuals, businesses, towns and cities to switch off their lights for one hour on March 29, 2008 at 8pm.

It started in Sydney, Australia, on 31st March last year, when the city turned off all of its lights at 7.30 pm for one hour. This event captured the world’s imagination, and during the course of the next few months the idea, and resultant Earth Hours, spread from city to city and from town to town across the world.

This Year’s Earth Hour

Rather than have a fractured event, with each city or town holding its own Earth Hour on different dates, the WWF is organising a whole world event to take place at 8 pm local time on March 29 this year.

The Idea Behind It All

The Earth Hour event symbolises the fact that each and every one of us can make a positive difference in the fight against climate change. It doesn’t matter who we are or where we live, because together we can make a difference.

What We Can Do

We can all participate, wherever we happen to be. If our city, town or community are taking part in the event, we can join in with them, or we can join on an individual basis. We will, after all, be taking part as members of a whole world community. To sign up just go to here.

It is a good idea to participate. Better than this, is the ongoing practise to use our energy and regulate our comsumption as if every day is earth day.

While I won’t be turning off my lights on earth day, I am very strict in recycling, and I continuously reuse and reduce everything in my family’s life, every single day. We’ve also taught our kids to do so.

Great article, and I agree with you totally Dee, we all can make a difference.

Hi Dee…What will I be doing during Earth Hour? Probably sitting in traffic in my car on a freeway here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I think this is nonsense. The whole Al Gore thing is nonsense. But nevertheless, the writing is great and was well done (as always!)

Saving the planet, conserving energy and resources – all that is great. The idea of a planned blackout scares me though, with crime the way it is. I think I’ll lend moral support to the cause, continue to recycle and conserve, but keep my yard light on.

Nicely covered and written up, nevertheless.
