12 Ways to Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Here are a few ways you can go to sleep well, because good sleep means a good life.
- Avoid movement and colour. A lot of people have things like TVs and laptops in their bedrooms. When you go to bed, don’t touch the TV or the laptop. These have a lot of movement and colour in the images and it isn’t ideal for sleeping because when you go to bed, these images still stick in your mind clouding your brain which won’t put you to sleep easily because you are thinking about it.
- Exercise. Exercise isn’t necessary but it’s obviously a bonus if you have it for good sleep. About 30 minutes of exercise everyday is good for your health keeping your metabolism in shape. Apart from that, it keeps you fit and after you are tired from exercise and you want something relaxing, sleep is the first most relaxing thing you have in mind so you can have a shower or a bath and then go to bed. You don’t have to do 30 minutes of constant exercise. You can do it in 3 instalments of 10 minutes each.

- A quiet and dark room. A quiet and dark room will aid your sleeping process no matter what because then you don’t have any distractions, allowing you to zone out peacefully into your sleep. Any distractions will just keep you awake longer.
- The tonic for night readers. If you are the kind who reads something before you go to bed, read something pleasant or better still, something lightly humorous. By reading something pleasant, you’ve got pleasant ideas and images in mind and if you do dream, then they will be pleasant too.

- Calm music. Many of us love to listen to music in bed. Don’t listen to some heavy metal or something disturbingly loud. Keep the volume to a low and listen to very calm music. It is said that ideally, a song that has beats slower than your heart beat is a good non-disturbing way to sleep. This means that your heart beats are faster than the beats of the song enabling you not to get distracted by the song but still listen to it.
- A good firm bed. Lumpy saggy beds can cause back aches and even though initially you may love the feeling of sinking into the mattress, a firmer bed can do you a lot more good in terms of posture and body. It will help you to put you to sleep better if you aren’t moving about loads in your bed.

- Happy thoughts. When you shut the lights and are in bed all cosy and nice, think of happy thoughts. Think of all the things that went well for you that day and you hope will go well for you the following day. This optimism psychologically will make you sleep in a pleasant way and have pleasant dreams. It stops you worrying for a while and hopefully the next day, you continue in the same mindset and you wont be worrying constantly.
- Deep breaths. If you find that you are lying in bed for more than 15 to 20 minutes and you haven’t gone asleep but you want to, dry deep breaths. Shut your eyes and start breathing deeply and tell yourself to go to sleep in your mind. This self-hypnosis will come in due time but it really does help sometimes when you just can’t go to sleep.

Out of all these very useful tips, the firm bed is the best! I swear by it…..and I still don’t sleep brilliantly!! Then again, I worked on nights for 20 years and now do 9-5, that doesn’t help!
