A Cultural Date

This is something that writers should do at least once a week.

A colleague of mine reckons that all writers need one of these at least once a week. A cultural date can be a trip to a museum or a theatre, a meeting with another writer, a poetry reading, a concert given by a known musician  or visiting an old historic building. These cultural dates are over and above that precious time alone doing nothing or the artist’s treat I’ve mentioned elsewhere, but it may be possible to do all three at once in fact. And none of them should be used as an excuse for not writing. They can, of course, act as welcome contrasts to hours sat at the computer keyboard.

Why do we need these?

A cultural date can serve to remind us of the big picture. Meeting another writer can remind us of both our success to date and how far we have yet to go. We can look at excellence and remind ourselves that that is what we seek. We actually feed our creative spirit by doing this. And we remind ourselves of why we are doing this at all.

Start now. Look out for something to do this week, and fill your diary up with other opportunities as they arise.
