A Greener You, a Greener Earth
A Beginners Guide to Becoming Greener and Helping Our Environment Last Longer; A Few Easy Steps.
In the last few years, Green living has become as common as finding a Starbuck’s on every corner of a major city street! Not only has it become part of our everyday lives but we can’t go anywhere nowadays without running in to a green product, advertisement or shopping bag for sale at our local food mart.
This no doubt allows for simpler ways to start living greener, but it also helps to remind us where we might be lacking in our part of saving our environment. Fear no more, I have put together an engagingly simple guide to help you start living greener today!
The main thing to remember is that you will want to start this new venture in small steps, everyone knows that attempting to tackle everything at once only leads to discouragement and eventually failure so take baby steps. Locate or evaluate the areas of your life that might need to be changed for example do you have a recycle bin in your home or garage? Do you use a water filter or purchase bottled water on a weekly basis? What kinds of light bulbs are you using and are your household cleaning products eco-friendly? These are very basic steps to becoming a greener you.
Next you will want to go to a local Home Depot or Lowe’s, Wal-Mart or Target to find a good sized recycle bin or call your local city sanitation department and request one for free if your community has a recycling program.
To start recycling you will want to check the bottoms or sides of packages or containers to see if they are recyclable. There will normally be a number ranging from 1 – 6 inside of a triangle, this will tell you how biodegradable the product is, so the lower the number the better the chances are that it will be recyclable, if there is no number then the chances are it cannot be recycled. Make sure you rinse out food or sticky beverage containers before placing the item in the bin.
You will then want to start purchasing items that are reusable like plastic dishwasher safe plates, bowls and cups instead of buying paper or foam items that are just going to be thrown out after one or two uses.
BYOC or bring your own coffee mug, and use it when hitting up your favorite coffee shop, you may even get a discount off your purchases for being so environmentally friendly!
