The American Flag is the symbol of our nation and should be treated with dignity and respect.

In 1923 at a national conference in Washington D.C. flag etiquette was broached.  It was declared that the flag represents the living country and is itself considered as a living thing.”

In 1942, the Congress adopted the Flag Code so that citizens would know how to display and care for the flag properly.

Here are a few guidelines:

Th flag should be flown in good weather unless the flag is made for inclement weather.

The flag should be light at all times, either by sunlight or other light sources.

The flag should never be used to carry or hold anything.

The flag can be cleaned and sewn when necessary but no mark or figure etc should be attached to the flag.  Also, it should not be used as an advertisement (printed on flag) or on things (such as napkins) that will be thrown away.

The flag should not be dipped to any person. It can be flown upside down only as a distress sign.

When a flag is so disfigured it is no longer a symbol of our nation, it should be destroyed by those who have the proper authority.

When flown at half-staff, the flag should be raised to the top than lowered to half-staff.  Before lower the flag, it should be raised to the top again.

When the flag is draped on a coffin, it should be placed with the union at the head over the left shoulder. The flag should not touch the ground or be lowered into the grave.
