Are You Burned Out?

A brief look at signs of burnout and ways to protect yourself.

  • •Work is no fun anymore
  • •Work and home duties feel like a burden
  • •Excessive irritability, rudeness to staff, clients, colleagues and family, increasing money focus
  • •Poor sleep, poor concentration, low energy, headaches, detachment
  • •Escapist behaviors, substance abuse
  • •Poor self-care habits, wanting to quit

Protect Yourself

  • •Strong sense of self esteem and purpose
  • •Good social support system
  • •Use humor as a coping skill
  • •Take good care of yourself
  • •Know when to say no
  • •Don’t take yourself or life too seriously
  • •Develop a broad group of activities and interests outside of work
  • •Use Diversional activities – television, reading, hobbies, exercise, music, vacations, napping, soothing bath, shopping (none to excess)
  • •Use Relaxation techniques – progressive relaxation, biofeedback, creative visualization, yoga
  • •Make Behavior changes – improving communication skills, expressing feelings, developing assertiveness skills, managing time and money more effectively, reducing external pressures
