Be a Human Lie Detector

How a person’s body language can let you know when a person’s lying. You can learn to be a human lie detector.

Check For Sweating

Liars tend to sweat more than people who tell the truth.  There is an exception to this because a person could be shy or nervous. It might also be hot, but then again, someone who has to keep their lies straight would suddenly become very hot.

Check Eye Movement

Liars may deliberately make eye contact to appear more sincere. They seem to think that they will give themselves away if they don’t look at you.  Liars also tend to blink more often than people who are telling the truth.  Right-handed people tend to look towards their right when they are remembering something that’s the truth.  If they are lying, they will look towards the left or down.  The reverse should be true for left-handed people.  They will look to the left when they are telling the truth and down or to the right when they are lying.

Reactions to Questions

Watch the person when you ask a question.  A liar will feel uncomfortable and turn their head or body away from you.  They may even put something between the two of you.  I think that it might be a way to distract themselves so they can avoid facing you when they are lying.  Also, an innocent person will go on the offensive while a lair tends to go on the defensive when accused of something.  My uncle did this with my grandmother when she accused him of taking money that he ended up taking.

Responses to Questions

Someone telling the truth will answer you right away.  A liar has to think about everything they’ve said and done carefully to keep the lie straight.  They want to avoid inconsistencies in their lie.  They want to cover up all the holes in their story so that the lies don’t start to contradict each other.

Usage of Words (Non-Physical Signs):

  • Use or repeat your exact words when answering a question.
  • Tend to not use contractions.
  • Duck questions.
  • Talk too much.
  • Speak in the same tone.
  • Won’t use pronouns

Change the Subject

A liar would be willing to change the subject while an innocent person would be confused by the change of topic.

These are the tips that I have for now.  Feel free to try them out on people you think are lying. You may end up becoming an expert on liars.

All good signs to look for, and I agree to these signs since I have observed these behaviors often!

I agree with you. Liars will give themselves away one way or another. Good signals to watch for.

    Dear Sis,
I have used peoples body language and speach for many years whether in person, my husband, or the person on television but I have never revealed how I do it as then a person can try to train themselves not to do those things but it’s very hard to do. Only people in certain fields can learn how to lie successfully. I was just talking to my husband last night about the issues of lies and he says ‘have you lied to me?’ and I said ‘of course’ and he said ‘like what’ I said ‘I don’t know but I am sure I would have we all do’. Everybody depending on what they do and what contact they have with people lie everyday. Everybody lies it depends on how many lies a person tells and what type they are. A great article hon.
    Love Shelley.

very interesting. body language normally can help us what is going on, one can always tell whether a person is up to something or hiding something. These are good observation, and furthermore, the eyes being the window of our soul never tell lies and it react differently if you are not telling the truth or you’re hiding something.

This is a brilliant article, CA! I am actually really impressed. I am actually quite good at detecting the liar because I have read articles before and I can spot a fake smile quicker than lightning but there were some things here that I could do with knowing. Really well researched and thoroughly interesting to make anyone the master of the art of lie detecting. The work by a genius, in a nutshell! :D

I must advise caution….there are some personalities so sensitive that they will reacte like a liar when they are in fact as innocent as a lamb.
