Be Smart and Get The Work Done
This article tries to make people think positively. It tries to make people understand that they can do more in a 24 hour day than they think they can, that is, by being smart. This means they should plan and manage their time.
Have you ever felt that you needed more than 24 hours in a day to complete all your tasks? Have you ever wondered how other fellow business people can afford to work half the day and spend the other half playing golf and still post super profits? Have you ever wondered how the one person in your class can afford to go dancing every weekend and still be the one who scores distinctions in class?. Have you ever wondered how your fellow manager, with the same or even more pressure than you, can maintain their cool the whole day and still manage to look like they have just walked out of the shower at 4 pm while you are drowning in so much paperwork and look like you have not had sleep for several days? Well, the answer is very simple. Those that are able to keep their head above the water simply work smarter not harder.
The concept of working harder is a thing of the past. People, friends tell us that you need to work harder in order to achieve success. Working harder does not necessarily mean that you will achieve success or complete the assignment given to you by your employer or achieve your targets set in your key result area document. What will give you an edge is working smarter, managing your time and your priorities efficiently. I believe that one does not always have to put in extra hours all the time, whilst it is necessary at times in order to cover more ground. However, proper self and time management makes a difference.
Ask yourself how a single parent, with two young children still in school, can manage to take the children to school and pick them up at different times due to different school activities, manage to go into the field for client visits, work on projects, still manage a work out five times a week in the gym, study part-time, manage a growing business and still look fresh, energetic and enthusiastic at the end of the day. The same parent must go home and assist the children with homework.
Managing time and priorities is the key to working smarter. Being able to create a schedule and keeping it is not very easy. Drawing up the schedule is easy but keeping up with your “to do list” for the day is quiet a challenge. Try to monitor your schedule for at least a month and you will notice a pattern which will be simple for you to adopt. There are many things in the work place that lead us to think we are working hard when in fact they are just time wasters. Look at the amount of time spent on telephone calls which may not necessarily be priority, and even the amount of time we spend reading junk emails. Always aim to leave unnecessary calls and emails for after working hours. Remain focused on the task at hand. What always helps, even as you set your things to do for the day, is to set time frames for each task such as what time to do it, how long it will take to complete. The challenge that many people face relates to discipline. One minute you are doing one task and before you know it and without completing it, you switch to the next. Learn to communicate with people within the organization that want to assign you with tasks when you will be able to give them your time. When you fail to do this, you end up being the one who works for that are smarter and you end up being the one who works harder. Remember to be realistic when setting time schedules for tasks. You will end up frustrated if at the end of the day you are not able to achieve any other tasks you set out to achieve.
