Brain rules is definitely a book to read not just by smart people but by population in general. In this book, Dr Medina reaches us how our brain works in real life situations plus some of the rules to increase it’s power output considerably.

Did you know that animals in the wild state have brains and bodies 30% bigger because of living in danger thus needing extra power? Animals and people that live in very safe places will not be as big nor as strong as those used to the danger. One of this things to boost your power is to put yourself in complex situations. Start a risky business, start a new demanding sport, do something hard!
Another thing Dr. Medina tells is that we only pay attention to interesting things. If you think you can learn or do anything boring you can keep on dreaming, that will never happen. Our brain seems to have a mechanism that concludes that only interesting things are important so it filters out the rest. Actually the more important something is for your survival, the more interesting that thing looks to you, such as food, money, sex, cars, spirituality and so on.
Our brain works mostly on memories. If all your memories were erased you would be a child again. Sure you would have an adult brain, but all your social behavior, all your computer knowledge, everything would be reset and you would start all over again. Kill me first before such thing ever happens.
Our brain is hungry, so hungry that even a few seconds without it’s favorite meal, glucose, you would be unconscious almost instantly. The modus operandis of the brain is so complex (electrical impulses, new neuron connections in real time) that it needs an incredible amount of food to be in top shape. If you want to lose weight, think more of your brain than of your body. Your brain working at peak condition needs as much as half the energy of all your intake. You waste more energy doing very complex actions than very body tough exercise. When your sugar is low, your brain is the first organ sending the alert through headaches and dizziness and irritation.
At last your brain is making new connections all the time. The connections your brain makes depend only on your input. If you want good connections to make you a good ping pong player you just need to play ping pong that your brain will make the new connections instantly.
