Chase Insomnia Away

Tips for sleeping better and falling asleep when you’ve exhausted your other possibilities.

The numbers on your clock are reading 2:47. You wish it were the afternoon. Nope. Nearly three o’ clock in the morning. Grrr…if you don’t fall asleep soon, you’re going to develop a massive headache and that’s something just wonderful to look forward to.

If this sounds like you, there’s good news! (And no, it doesn’t involve Serta nor counting sheep.) If counting to infinity won’t even work, here are some remedies, some you might find unconventional, some you might not try even in a thousand years, some you might find downright strange, but all you have probably not heard of:

  • Go to a different room in your home and sit on a rocking chair. Cover yourself with a quilt or something that keeps you warm and just rock back and forth. That should do the trick and when you are half-asleep, crawl back to bed.
  • Turn on the radio to a late night station and just dance to whatever’s on until you are too tired to stay awake.
  • Open War and Peace and start reading. You are bound to fall asleep after a while.
  • Listen to classical music.
  • Do a head stand against the wall. If you don’t know how, just go to the wall, put your head to the floor and lean up against the wall. Put your hands on the floor next to your head on either side. Lean your back on the wall and put your knees on your elbows and lift your legs straight up against the wall.
  • Spin around the room until you are dizzy.
  • Have a glass or two of whiskey. That should knock you out, especially if you don’t normally drink that much.
  • Run up and down the stairs in the dark, pretending goblins are after your leprechaun gold.
  • Recite the alphabet backwards, better yet, the Greek alphabet.
  • Listen to an audiobook.

Haha I absolutely loved this piece. I always have trouble sleeping – without fail. It’s 12:38 AM right now. These tips are useful and if nothing else gave me some much needed humor. Thank you so much, Alexis.
