Choose the Right Road

We as disabled adults need to create our own paths, our own destinies – which path do you choose?

There is this dirt road I take when I do my evening ride. The one where I get out of the house, crank my radio, and clear my head. Just me maybe some herb and The Red Sox on the radio. It’s a town owned road with and seven houses. Appears the people who reside there are well to do, Victorian houses with decks and hot tubs, boat parked in the yard still on its trailer waiting for more good weather. The road is flat, straight ride but pretty narrow.

Don’t know anybody that lives their personally but whenever I take that road and someone is jogging or just soaking in the rays, they will wave to you. They don’t know me but I can count on smiles and hands when anyone is on that road.  Everybody wants to be a friend. Allow them to be.

The road runs diagonal to the main road, which is tarred, for a little over a mile. The main road may be tarred but by no means does that indicate smooth sailing. It’s always torn up by overloaded trucks, years of frost heaves and repairs the State thinks will correct the problem. And during the summer there are always two or three flaggers pushing you to one side of the road. I’ve used that road for about 27 years and traveled it for 44 years and I can only remember it being paved two times. The town and State seem to be doing a lot repairs on the shoulders, making them wider, so I expect to see some new pavement before the year is up.

That main road is really hilly and curvy. The only real sensible reason for going straight and taking versus turning off on the dirt road is:

Shorter amount of time going to the next town. Speed limit on Main road is 50 whereas I have never seen anyone go over 20 on the dirt road……there are no speed limit signs.

That dirt road straight, narrow, closer to the river. The only thing that separates you from the pristine waters for 3/10 of a mile is some old railroad tracks still in place but unused and some huge oak trees with so many leaves on them they try to hide the rivers beauty. Beautiful view on the dirt road, and some portions of the tarred road. on a 70 degree day in Maine.

The tar road is less desirable but much faster whereas the Dirt road is from days gone past, slower moving, but quiet, serene.

Which road would you take? Does it really matter if you’re in a hurry or not?

The moral, and the old cliché, stop and smell the roses. Pull over when on the dirt road take out your pen and paper, camera. Seeing such beauty puts a whole new spin on life. We disabled folks need to create a new spin almost daily
