Complimenting People

by Maria Padilla in Advice, September 21, 2009

Here are a few things you can say to compliment someone… use your own common sense.

It can be very daunting sometimes to compliment someone.  At least I know I tend to get anxious and nervous, and before you know it, I feel like I made a fool out of myself.

I am no expert in complimenting people.  However, I know that reinforcing positive traits and lots of positive feedback can lead to a long term friendship – or more.

In order to feel a little more natural, I sat down and wrote a list of the compliments that I like the best, and yes, rehearsed them on my own.  That way, when I felt like I wanted to compliment someone, I didn’t feel as nervous or anxious, and therefore, more authentic.

Here’s a list of what I came up with.  You can come up with your own, but if you want to use this one, it’s okay, too.

  1. You look great in that outfit.
  2. You’re smart.
  3. You’re pretty.
  4. You’re funny.
  5. Your hair looks exceptionally good today.
  6. I like that color on you.
  7. I love it when you smile.
  8. You’re fun to hangout with.
  9. You are awesome.
  10. I love the way you look today.
  11. I like your smile.
  12. I like your eyes.
  13. Those pants/jeans/skirt look good on you.
  14. I love your laugh.
  15. You’re a good person.
  16. You’re sexy.
