Coping Skills Step Three & Four
We need to learn to trust even though at times this is difficult.
God can provide healing and grace so that we don’t have to feel isolated and so alone.
Step 3
Sometimes when we trust in people we become disappointed because people are fallible. We know ourselves we can make promises and for whatever reason we end up breaking them. In business dealings it is important to have a written agreement between the parties involved. If we only verbally agree then we could end up losing whatever investment we have put into the business.
There will always be con artists and charlatans trying to make a quick buck at the expense of others, so we need to take sufficient care and sufficient risk when dealing with people. Anything worthwhile in life takes a certain element of risk which can also be very exciting and give you an adrenalin rush. Coming to the crossroads of your life and not really knowing what direction to take can be a good thing. You begin to realise that you no longer wish to continue living the way you have been. You begin searching for new horizons and a better way of life. It may be a change in spiritual direction that you wish to follow. Maybe you are looking for a new relationship, a new career, meeting new friends or taking up a different hobby. Whatever it is, we need to come out of our safe cocoon and become like a beautiful butterfly of hope and renewal.
It is also important to discern the level of trust you have in individuals. Professionals and support groups are bound by a code of confidentiality. You also need to trust in yourself and in your abilities, gifts and talents. When we withdraw from people and isolate ourselves, we are not trusting in people especially those who are trying to help us.
Quite often people function on a surface level and are afraid to go any deeper because they don’t want to face any emotional pain. By actually trusting in someone who can support us through the pain we begin to grow and mature as human beings.
It is vital to love yourself just as you are and appreciate your own uniqueness and value.
Step 4
When we feel cut off from God’s love we can feel like an empty vessel and very much on our own. Usually when we hit rock-bottom and we have exhausted all other possible resources we can sometimes look to God to help us through the really difficult times in our lives. We have been so used to living in a self-centred way that we fail to place God at the centre of the picture. God can do the impossible. He is waiting for us to reach out and accept His help. He is our heavenly Father and is there to guide us throughout our lives. If some people find it difficult to believe in a God or Creator they can trust in the goodness and compassion of their fellowmen.
