I don’t consciously think about any of this when I am talking to someone, but I don’t see how it is any different than the hundreds of other behaviors and ways of conversing that we are socially influenced to automatically repeat.
From a young age, we are taught to listen in conversation, and not tell someone about their faults in a rude way if we want to get along with them. Perhaps these small socially brought about mannerisms are also not “Who we are”, but we all use common ways of speaking because we realize we will get along with people better.
If someone is rude and abrasive, he might be acting out who he really is, but he can always change for the better.
Connections between people are not magic, but attraction is not a choice.
If you do everything needed to create attraction, the other person cannot help but be attracted to you. Actors work on creating connections with their audience, and in a sense, we are all actors playing ourselves. We can all change our mannerisms and speech patters for the better, to get along with those around us.
