Detecting Lies

Knowing when someone is lying is a very useful skill. Read here to discover the tricks that police officers use.

Ever wanted to know whether you really look fat in those jeans? What about whether your child actually went to the library to “study”? Or even really serious things like, did your employee steal from you?

As you can see, being able to tell when someone is lying is really important.

Body Language

When lying, someone’s body movement will be very stiff. They will also look as if they’re trying to take up as little space as possible. They might avoid eye contact and may fidget eg. play with hair, cross and uncross legs etc.

They are also unlikely to touch their head or heart with an open hand.

Emotional Gestures

When someone is lying their emotional timing might be a little off. For example, when someone says ‘You look great!’ they might smile after they have finished saying it, instead of during the statment.

They’re facial expressions might not match what they’re saying as well. They might frown while saying “You look great” for example.

Also, their expressions might be limited to just their mouth. When someone smiles sincerely their whole face should be involved.

Interactions

A liar will attempt to face away from you and use more words than necessary to explain something simple.

They are uncomfortable with silence and will keep talking unnecessarily.

They’re grammar or word order might be wrong.

If you change the subject they will act relieved.

They may use sarcasm, or humour when they talk.

Good luck!

This has been something that people have studied for hundreds of years. Good job putting some simple signs in an easy to read format.
